So if you are sending a stereo signal to 1&2 why are the meters on 5&6 showing activity as well?

I was planning to get a 1/2" 4 track but then there's this neat machine. 1/2" sounded better from most source I read but R8 is also very refined by the time it came out. Does it compared well to say Revox for recording use? Running cost might be similar since the R8 only run in 15 ips.

You're so right. Its not really a consumer deck, more suited to semi-pro studio recording. Fidelity is unsurpassed for such a compact 8-track recorder,

Hey @Bigg Matt I have an R8 that I bought new ~30 years ago. Seldom used, then stored & sealed in it’s orig box for the past 20. Set it up today. The motors make more noise than I remember, and the reverse won’t work once the take up reel is half full. It *may* need service. After this long, I guess it’s likely. Do you still service these decks? Thanks for any info.
@5thcomm

Hi FB, The R8 has a few common issues, like the ones you mentioned, that will require attention over time. Yes, I still service these machines, and I'll gladly service your's, but most of the repairs can be done as DIY projects at the user level. Take a look at this video and decide if you're comfortable with doing these repairs: kzitem.info/news/bejne/q6qHyI2moqCeiIY I'd encourage you to give it a try, once you open this machine, whatever is generating the noise should become obvious. Using epoxy or other adhesive on the motor pulling should fix the REW issue. You can do this.

If you record on track 1,2,5,6, like in video, is somehow equally with left and right channel for the 4-track machines? I mean, if you record on tape on tracks 1,2,5,6, the tape is playable correctly on a 4-track machine?

This is a great question. In theory, that should work. I sold this one some time ago. The next time I restore an R8 I will try this experiment - thanks.

Hey Big Matt, do you have a recommendation for a budget mixer for recording 8 tracks at once on an R8? Thanks!
@5thcomm
4 жыл бұрын
Hey Yoko, I'm certain you know more about mixers than I do. If I were going to use one with the R8, I'd get one without VU meters (cheaper) and you can monitor the inputs on the R8. I picked up a 7 channel Behringer a couple years ago for around $200. It was an overkill for my needs.

Hey big Matt, can we do some serious recording with this machine? Do you consider it like semi professional recorder?
@5thcomm

Comes down to bandwidth. With the R8, you're cramming 8 tracks on a 1/4 inch tape, so in general, a 1/2 track recorder, spreading only 2 tracks across the width of the 1/4 inch tape will give you better fidelity. That said, the quality of sound produced on these R8s is such that I have made recordings using 2 tracks at a time ( 1& 5, 2&6, 3&7, 4&8) to record LPs, CDs and such in stereo to get 4 songs across the width of the tape listening to them individually. As far as creating your own music on a compact 1/4" deck, the R8 is hard to beat. The TASCAM 388 gives you many more options, but is much bulkier and expensive.
