Excellent video! Looking forward to seeing more on the X-26, especially no input feedback!!! I rediscovered my original X-26 last year, but there were a few issues I couldn't fix, so bought a "spares backup" from eBay, although in reality the eBay one is pretty perfect so using that instead. Just LIKED and SUBSCRIBED!

Hi. Nice videos, your work is great! I bought that machine but its not working. When I plug it the led swichts on and everything seem to be ok, but when I press the play button (or any other button) nothing happens. The mechanism of cassette does not go up nor there is any rotation whatsoever, its completely dead. Im using an original fostex AC cable but its 12V instead of 15V, might this be an issue? Like I said, the complete tape mechanism is dead, no sound, no elevation, no nothing... Cheers from Spain, keep it up!!!

I am very happy with this video, this is great help. I wan't to replace the belts on my X-26, although i find it hard to find an exact replacement kit. If I were to buy a full 25-135mm set from Amazon, is there a certain brand I should look for? Thanks!
@Tetrakan

I’ve just bought those sets from random suppliers. Maybe a third of the belts in those sets have a kink, but there are usually enough good ones included it’s worth the price.

Hi There, Brilliant video. I am only starting to learn how to tear down 4 tracks. I have a Fostex xr-5 and it was stupidly left in a outside shed and the rain got at it. Is it repairable at all do you think? It seems to be working lights on etc and tape working but I opened up the case and it was waterlogged and rusty boards I let it dry out and I don't know were to start? what next? It would be great if you could reply to this? Cheers. Kevin

Thanks. It may be salvagable, and itll have parts value at the very least, but that sounds like a lot to deal with for a first project, to be honest. Ideally, you'd find something that just needed a basic clean and new rubber first time you fix up a four track!

@@Tetrakan Thanks for the quick response. I have been watching alot of your videos this afternoon and found that my xr-5 looks identical to the fostex x -55 your teared down. I look forward to working on this. I will take it slowly - how and where do I get the replacement belts and the parts as some are rusty. You have a great skill with this!! Hey, love your videos! For tapelooping, between a yamaha mt100II and a Tascam Porta 05, which one would you recommend? Thanks!
@Tetrakan
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The yamaha I'm not as familiar with but I think it's 3&3/4ips, double the tape speed of the others, meaning it'll sound less lofi, and a 30 second tape loop will only run for 15 seconds.... that's not what I'd want for that application. Of the other two the tascam is definitely easier to use and maintain, but the fostex's mixer is more flexible and allows you to do no input drone/oscillation stuff if you were so inclined.
@kaerustation

@@Tetrakan many thanks for your input! i now got some new offers : a yamaha mt4x for around 200 bucks, and a tascam 424 mk1 for 350 bucks. i really want the tascam because of the three speed settings but damn that price is high..
@Tetrakan
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah tough one. MT4X is better value for money and more feature rich, but the small footprint and 3rd speed makes the OG 424 the best unit for loop stuff.
@kaerustation

@@Tetrakan what is the "small footprint" ?
@Tetrakan
2 жыл бұрын
I mean it takes up less space on a desk alongside synths, pedals etc, and because it is smaller & lighter it would be easier to transport to practice rooms or venues.

Could be just the belts need to replaced. At worst you might need to partly disassemble clean and lubricate some of the gears which raise and lower the magnetic heads. Details in this series of videos about the cassette player kzitem.info/door/PLYsfQOh0tsJVl859LSG8MXisbMwLEW-L5

The record protect tab on the cassette needs to be intact. If its broken off, cover the recess with sellotape or similar and the record button will press down.

Hello and thank you for your video. I just picked up an X-26 from a friend of mine. But I encounter a problem. It lights up but the play does not start (the heads do not rise enough and nothing starts). Would you have an idea? An email on which I can send you a short video of my problem so, maybe you can help me fix it? I live in the middle of the French countryside and I may have to fix it myself (and I'm not a connoisseur at all). Thank you anyway :)

Ooft! I’d love to be a fly on the wall when tascam ninja was talking about me….surely a rising tide lifts all ships, and I’ve made his life easier by encouraging people to get interested in the topic? My experience as a customer of his has been pretty mixed to be honest, but probably not a good idea to get into that in public comments! It’d be great to talk to these old school BBC types, their knowledge is not well documented, and I’d rather hear it from the horse’s mouth than have to guess and backwards engineer all the time.
