Like I really think it’s time we asked ourselves, what’s more important? Someone’s self proclaimed entitlement toward gatekeeping, or the distribution of knowledge and art? Easy solution, if the creators don't want it up online for free for legal reasons then they can put it out online on an existing streaming service or some existing platform for a few bucks with a quick content warning. Super easy fix. Even if they take the actual stolen rip and put that up publically, I'd still say they're in the right as long as it's accessible. They'd get tons of money, tons of publicity, a lot of renewed interest in the series, and all they'd have to do is shove in 5 seconds of warning text saying something like "The following episode has been banned for intense and frightening content, viewer discretion is advised." That would solve any complaints and cost basically nothing to do.

There is a 1954 Kenya Boy film by Daiei, which hasn’t been available in Japan for decades, but that’s mostly due to legal reasons. It doesn’t help that its truer to the text (and just as weird) animated remake by Toei Animation seems to be more popular in certain countries (including Sweden and Greece) rather than in Japan, because when it was first released there, it bombed hard and got devoured by the huge national success of an anime film based on Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicäa manga, much to the surprise of both critics and audiences alike. Also not helping is that both are adapted from an old graphic novel series which hasn’t long been translated into English, but was fair for its day.

I love these videos even more than videos on stuff that's currently lost. It's especially satisfying to see something long lost you'd totally forgotten about pop up in one of your FM uploads, like the Sesame Street Wicked Witch of the West episode or Quantum Quest [which I absolutely gotta watch now] Also, don't feel bad you don't really care about lost dubs or game show stuff, most people don't, and as far as I'm aware, they're niche even in the lost media following.

Game shows are hard, because they're often not considered worth releasing on DVD or any archive sites. I'm a Dana Hill fan and her appearances on To Tell the Truth are some of the more interesting appearances of her later live-action work.

I still don't see how this was scary. I tried my best to put myself in the shoes of a kid, but when I watched the episode all I can imagine is how bored I would be at how awkward the dialogue was and just slightly uncomfortable due to all the yelling in the episode. But that's about it. I grew up with the original OZ as a seven year old and was never terrified of the witch, so maybe that's why it doesn't make any sense of it being banned to me. Don't get me wrong though, I agree it lived up to the hype. It was very fascinating and fun.

You have to keep in mind that the Witch is a threatening, malicious entity who has the power to turn people into inanimate objects and appear right next to her victims at any time with no warning. The fear would have come from the feeling of being powerless against this evil, inescapable figure who constantly shows up out of nowhere to torment you. Additionally, you have the weird sound effects, the visual effects (red smoke and the electric shock filter), the part where she's in a bit of a screaming match with the owners of the diner (young children generally don't respond well to adults getting into heated arguments), and the fact that she comes back at the end, implying that the characters had to suffer through that whole fiasco yet again.

Most the creators of lost media don't want their work found or have some legal reason they can't release it. If copyright of these lost works were honored and respected to the highest degree, the entire of the subsection of lost media would be pointless. It would come down to only archiving works that the creators wanted to be publicly archived, or the companies wanted to be publicly archived. Being upset that some corporate archive who's trying to use the rarity of the episode for an attraction was "robbed" or "stolen from" and being an avid member of the lost media community who wishes for these works to be shared makes no sense to me. Seems like a bad take.

Private collections of lost media should not be a thing, whoever leaked the lost Sesame Street episode is no criminal, he's a hero! Just looked on the Museum Of The Moving Image's website and it's $9-15 a ticket. How much of an ass do you have to be to keep something that is so sought after private, and then charge people the privilege of viewing it, in a place 99% of the people who want to view it won't be able to easily access?!

I understand it was deceitful taking and distributing the episode without expressed permission BUT things like this have no reason to be hidden from the public as if they'd be detrimental to the public's precious eyeballs. Remember how they banned Catcher in the Rye and the book wasn't brainwashing or intimidating at all whatsoever??? The US government lives by this and it's insulting. All information should always be open to the public period.

I really don't understand why Sesame Workshop didn't officially release the episode online themselves; it wouldn't have been leaked illegally if they had done so. I hate when companies and private entities hoard lost media and prevent the public from seeing it; I bet some private collector has all the lost Doctor Who episodes in his attic.

I love and adore the Gibb brothers. I've got to correct a fact- Andy wasn't officially part of The Bee Gees, actually. He performed alongside them and they wrote music together, and they were even going to include him in the band, But I think his addiction issues had gotten too overwhelming to make it work. Andy Gibb was as talented as the rest of the brothers, and I'm just so happy this got archived properly! I think that he should've had a way bigger career than he did. I think clips of him on American tv are hard to come by. Thank you, thank you, thank you whoever came by it 🥰😗😅☺️😊💜

Gonna be real honest, I'm not even the remotest bit concerned about some people copying and sharing lost media that wasn't even made by the people who currently "own" it. our society's idea of ownership is so laughably stupid and anti-creative I can't be bothered to care, I hope more stuff like the sesame street thing is found even in the same manner.
