I met Dave when I was the high school choice of a music store in Salem, Oregon, as the general store helper and janitor. The best player in the school system was the person who got the gig. Ironically, when I quit band because of a new director, I lost the job; lol, early politics, I guess. However, while employed, I got to see Dave and another tech, Eric Meehan, work. Eric went through a Selmer Mark VI I had acquired twice to set it up perfectly. At that time, Dave was making wild brass instruments that were mixtures of different instruments melded together. Dave was a funny, very nice person with incredible talent. It was a joy to be at the store. I spent a lot of time in the basement repair area. I was not surprised when I started seeing the first Monette trumpets. Dave is brilliant and has been a huge help to all the players who get his horns and/or mouthpieces. I feel honored to have been around in the early stages of my own playing in this atmosphere. Ironically, a bass player I went to music school with ended up with Wynton's band and now teaches at Julliard. Again, what an amazing lucky ride to have been around these people! Dave, if you read these posts, you will know who I am. Congratulations on all your great work.

After hearing that, its hard to see how anyone would want the retro apart from looks 😂 The lower register is so much better on the Unity mouthpieces.

I know everyone is different, and what sounds one way in front of the bell, is different behind the bell, and that doesn't include the "feel" - how it feels to your lips, your tongue, your air stream, and to your Psyche. Nevertheless, I preferred by a wide margin the sound of the RETRO.

Thats so interesting…anyway its in the end personal taste & what suits you as a player. Its a boring world if everyone is the same
