When there is leak and pump stops so both the isolating valves (near to rams)will open or only one .in video one is in close position and one in open position when the system is stopped due to low low level Pls clarify Thanks

Great explanation sir. Just a small doubt, When at 13:20 the bypass valve of cyl 1 and 2 opens due to lack of hydraulic oil pressure from servo pump, shouldn't the other bypass valve also open at the very same time or it has some lag or will it not open at all?? Please clarify sir

I have a question at 13:20, what is the reason why the bypass valve of unit 1 opened after there was a leak? I hope you would see my comment and answer my question because I would like to take your video as a reference in my report for school😅

If the by-pass valve doesnt open, the residual oil in the cylinders will act as an hydrualic break! The rams of the isolated side still moves with the rudder stock right? you dont mechanically dismount them so as to ensure that the oil in the cyliners do not act as a brake the by-pass valve opens so that the pressure can transfer from one cylinder to another! If by-pass valve doesnt open then the oil will still pass through the relief valves! But that's not desired! Hope i explained it well! Good luck with your presentation!

One question sir.......what is the type of pump used here ? Does the pump have capability to control the flow rate? Or the flow control is done by directional control valve.....pls reply

Very informative video sir. I have a doubt regarding safematic system. While the #1 system is on operation what if the hydraulic leak is on high pressure line on #2 side say near ram cylinder 3? The oil level in the #1 reservoir will still go down and the system will be islotaed automatically. Now #2 system will come up but as the leak is near ram cylinder 3 the oil level in the #2 reservoir will go down too. So as I see both the system will be hampered. Thank you in advance.

Yes if the leak is after the auto isolation valve the oil will leak anyways... This is the reason why Low level alarm (before low-low trip & change over )and quick human intervention on time is very important. Even if this is the case as you mentioned, watchkeeping engineer is able to correct it manually by refilling the reservoir on the side where the pipe is intact. This is why during critical operations like manoeuvring or standby both systems are operated individually with AIS valves closed. Large ships have totally different design where sets of RAMs completely isolated by design, where the required torque is achieved only with 2 sets of RAM. Therefore such designs doesn’t have interconnection between hydraulic lines, no concept of auto isolation valve etc, Also such designs have the by-pass valve operated by the main pump itself. This is safematic by 'installation itself' no isolation valves required.

Continuing on this question sir, If the leak is after autoisolation valve and the watchkeeper comes and fills the tank 1 with the oil how he can ensure the closing of autoisolation valve ( I mean is there any manual way also to close the autoisolation valves?)

@@youngsinatra69 Depends if the ship steering is purchased that way! But yes for it to be in compliance with safematic requirement 1 set of rams should provide the operations needed as required by SOLAS! Meaning it is 100% redundant!

Suppose number 2 unit is running.but leak is on no 1 side. So even after closing bypass valve the leak will continue and oil from no 1 unit unit also will be lost. This is wrong I think.
@thedieselship

In any case it wont affect steering capability of #1. Safematic requires that, issue on one of the steering should not render the other one out of operation. The idea is to ensure steering capability is available with one!.
@thedieselship

If #2 is running and the leak is on #1, yes the AIS will close and #2 will still continue to run! I dont understand why it is wrong? which ever side has low oil level that side will close no matter which is running! If you ask me if the level drops in both tanks! Steering gear will trip! Good luck
