Completely agree with the assessment. Despite Paulie never being a rat (as Tony Sirico had requested when accepting the role) he was certainly disloyal. He had no problem sowing discord between the families for personal gain. And let's be honest, Tony's disdain came from Paulie completely botching the payment pick up from Valery. So ultimately, Paulie was mad at Tony for his own fuck ups but decided make his life difficult over it.
@SopranosBlueprint

Yes! I think about your first point quite often. If it's about loyalty, undermining the boss by talking behind his back to the point of causing extreme turmoil between the families that could've resulted in bloodshed seems pretty disloyal to me, as well. And getting pissed at Tony at the end of season three for "ruling against him" with the Morristown check cashing store robbery. And then of course all the way back in S1 telling Sil he can't get past Tony seeing a woman therapist. Sil had to promptly put him in his place.

Paulie might have been even more selfish than Tony, and that’s saying something. He only looked out for himself and did not care about any other person whatsoever. Hell, he killed an old lady he knew from childhood, for money, which he used to try to get back in good with Tony after shafting him with New York. Also,Paulie was the worst earner in the borgata because he was lazy. Not much of an asset to Tony except as muscle.

I think this reflects the subjectiveness of Carmela's line about Tony not having friends. Part of it was her just being mean, guys like Silvio and her own cousin Chris definitely loved Tony. But he can't really be friends with his crew, since they're opportunistic sociopaths. Silvio was definitely loyal, Chris and Paulie were loyal until their respective incidents with Tony. Chris and Paulie lash out when they feel betrayed, which makes them incapable of being real friends, and there's Tony himself who struggles to love people after having to off Puss. But that's kind of how life actually is, most friendships are built on opportunistic reasons and nostalgia.

I been bing watching Sopranos a lot lately. I think you should of included Vito. He lasted most of the series until he was found to be gay/ bisexual and got whacked because of it. Do you remember Vito was Tony biggest earner and one of his hardest workers. Tony always mentioned that after Vito died. I think part of Tony regretted letting Vito get whacked because Tomy wasn't pulling in the same money numbers after Vito wasn't in his crew anymore. Vito even came out of hiding and risked his life and lost his life trying to get back in Tony's good grace to work for him. It didn't work out at all for Vito. Vito was loyal to Tony to a fault.
@Montgomery13
Жыл бұрын
When Tony was in the coma, Vito mentioned to Larry they need a boss who has longevity, he was basically hoping Tony died so he could ascend to a higher position. For example he also told Phil Letando about his hesitations to give Carmela the $100,000 because Tony might die. And the only reason he came back to New Jersey to get into Tony's good graces was because he was simply bored of life in New Hampshire, it bored him, he wanted the respect, the money, the life. But it was never ever going to be that simple because New York was always going to want Vito whacked and several people in Tony's "glorified crew" wanted him dead such as Paulie & Carlo and to an extent Silvio. Vito had to go everyone knew it. Tony just did not want to because Vito made millions for Tony, remember Tony mentions to Carlo he wouldn't be able to afford the new boat had it not been for Vito. Vito was not loyal, he was loyal to himself not Tony.

I like the video, but I did find it a bit superficial. Like Sil is indeed an obvious choice for #1, but when was his loyalty ever really tested? When did he ever have a really good reason to be upset with Tony? They were childhood friends and Tony treated him with more respect and favor than the rest. We saw Sil has an explosive, irrational temper, but we never saw their relationship tested much at all. Bobby could be argued to be the most loyal in that he was treated like trash by Tony compared to the others. It wasn't until much later that Tony warmed to him even a little. Yet Bobby is unwaveringly loyal to the order of the family. When he's under Junior, he goes along unquestionably. When he's under Tony, all the mistreatment is taken in stride and he consistently does his job and follows orders. Chris is tested more than any of the others I think we can say, though often through his own fault. But his tendency to look up to Tony is unique among all of them. Had it not been Adriana in the car with Tony when it got flipped over and those rumors of an affair spread, and instead been the wife of one of the others, would they have actually killed Tony? All Chris could manage was to come into the Bing yelling and waving an empty gun. Paulie even said he had to have known the gun was empty. And if he really wanted Tony dead, he would have come up quietly. He knows how to kill, he's not an idiot. All he wanted was confrontation and to earn back respect from people, but never to kill Tony. Given that he had good reason to think Tony hooked up with Adriana, that shows tremendous loyalty. Not sure any of the others would have managed that. Even Bobby was willing to fight with Tony just over some insults to Janice that were normal between the two of them. And Paulie, although I'd still agree he's at the bottom of the list either way, the context of his betrayal is important. He was already feeling betrayed by Tony at that time by having an upstart like Ralph get favor just because he's a good earner despite being poison to the whole family otherwise. Of course he was a very greedy guy and never kicked up the full amount to Tony and tried to hide money from him, so Tony had plenty of reason not to favor him more in disputes between him and Ralph. We can say for sure Paulie would have been fine with Tony getting killed if a good position had actually been waiting for him under Carmine. And while I would agree Sil and Chris would never go along with that, I'm not sure about Bobby. I could see Bobby being fine with NY killing Tony with a similar deal for him, at least before he married Janice. After that, probably not. So while I think Paulie is definitely at the bottom no matter how you cut it, the rest are a lot more uncertain.

Just for fun, I’ll disagree with the number 1. The way Tony was declining as a person towards the end makes me think him and Sill could of gotten into it. On more then one occasion Tony told Chris he was the future of the family. Chris was put to the test and always sided with Tony. Chris also had enough dirt on other family members to keep them in line. I agree with the line up in the video, just having a fun rebuttal.

I think you're reading Bobby all wrong. You owe your allegiance to your captain. Junior was his captain and he remained loyal. That doesn't show disloyalty to Tony that just shows that Bobby was a stand-up guy. I also think you're misreading Christopher's question. I don't think he was quite sure of himself and where he fit into things and was worried about what his situation might be if Tony wasn't the boss. Looking for a little guidance from big pu$$y I think would be natural. We all know they live in a highly fluid world everything can change with one bullet or one pair of handcuffs at any time. There is however no question about your order.

Thanks for the comment! The way I see it, by season two, when we meet Bobby, Junior is in jail/on house arrest/surviving at a subsistence level, per Tony’s instructions. Tony was the person who Bobby (and everyone else) answered to from that point on, which Tony hammered home in the “To the victor, belongs the spoils” scene. Bobby wasn’t passing on a message TO the guy in charge, he was passing a message on to Junior FROM the guy in charge.

Yep! I could see that being the case given the variables - Canadian, curly hair, looking a bit like he was “on the pavers” - talk about irony for Bobby - and while the guy was doing laundry of all things.

Bobby hands down, sil pulled a bunch of underhanded shit with Paulie and Chris and Tony even, Bobby was jrs guy and would’ve had to go along with the hit on Tony or be in the trunk next to him, Bobby may have hit him in the face but it was out of loyalty to his wife. And

Who but Silvio would be capable of killing Adriana without remorse? Even Tony couldn't, so he ordered Sil to do it.

He sure was ice cold. It’s interesting how they couldn’t bear to show her being shot, though. Their real life psyches couldn’t go through with it, understandably so!

It wasn't loyalty for Chrissie to give up Ade: It was cowardice, as Adriana would have to be clipped either way. Chris pussed out and farmed the job to his cuz. Dick move.

I'd argue it wasn't cowardize either, since Christopher was willing to be killed by Tony when he heard the Adriana rumors. He couldn't live a life on the run, he saw that family on that gas station where they all were crammed up in that little car and Christopher realized that he loved his lifestyle way more than he loved Adriana. But Christopher framed it to Tony as he was doing it because of loyalty to him.

Chrissy was easily most loyal hence the reason he called Chris after Tony killed ralphie

That wasn't an act of loyalty from Christopher. It was fuelled purely by selfishness and survival.
