There are so many videos on youtube that talk about Megaman's mechanics & how LEGENDARY they were, and like 80% of them all trail into Egoraptor's Sequelitis series.... sometimes it's a shame Arin's so busy with Game Grumps these days....

"Rock had a sister, two daddies and six brothers!" HAHAA!!!! LOL I never thought I'd hear the narrative of the first Mega Man game sound like a twisted reading of Heather Has Two Mommies as read by Charlie from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia doing his glue-sniffingly best at an impression of Morgan Freeman Seriously, that IS the image I got in my head upon listening to that - and it had me in stitches :D

If you've seen the first Sequelitis you'd know that the handicapped jumping and whipping controls in Castlevania 1 are 100% intentional. That's kind of a methaphore of being in an actual scary situation because they couldn't achieve the same level of depth with 8-bit graphics and music. Castlevania 2 messed up so badly because it used the already established controls of Simon but the game had a completely different structure.

i was at the age of 5 when i got my first console... and it was the NES with that "3 games" cartridge (Super Mario Bros. / World Cup Soccer / Tetris) and i liked these games a lot but then... then i got MegaMan 2 and still to that day it is the best side-scroller i've ever played! gameplay, music, setting, difficulty just everything is perfect in that game... well, at least to me. MegaMan is one of my childhood heroes next to Link or better said The Legend of Zelda, i played the shit out of those games... ahhhh good old memories!

I really respect how you spent so much attention and care giving props to Mega Man 1. So many people seem to just kinda forget it or not care about it too much; the music, gameplay, balance etc. are all a bit underdeveloped / less refined when compared to Mega Man 2 and onwards, and 2 especially is the apple of most players' eye since it was always the popular one and even Inafune's favorite. But MM1 is still a masterpiece of a game itself, and I love how you explain why the classic series...

Well I agree that Mega Man X controls perfectly well. Though i prefer the Zero series' controls. Not for the R button or anything. I mean that kinda sucks until you get used to it. I mean how good the dashing feels. Whenever I dash in the X games, it always feels super clunky. Granted in X4 Zero has a slightly better dash to compensate for his melee-based combat, and that's probably why the dash feels so good in the Zero series, since combat is more melee based. Of course I won't speak for the level design since that series has quite the difficulty. My opinion though. Mega Man X still controls pretty great. A smidge clunky, but to be expected for the time.
@bezoticallyyours83

Me too. I played the zero series before the x games and he's such a clunker in comparison, I'm talking the first 3 x games. Zero's controls definitely feel faster and smoother.
@AcroxShadow

For the zero games I always set the controls to Type 2 and Type B so R is dash and pressing L will immediately fire the special instead of having to hold it then press B, allowing you to double charge your weapons.

GenmaTheSamurai ZERO SERIES IS FASTER THAN X SERIES BECAUSE THE GBA IS LIGHT AND NOT RAM HOGGING. Compare the mobility of Zero from Z1 and X1. Zero is super quick.Thats not to say X1 counterpart is slow. But simply put Zero series zero in x1 and see who wins.
@GenmaTheSamurai
9 жыл бұрын
Syay that to mega man Zero 1 and its rediculous slowdown lol. Dash STILL felt a bit better. Actually in X4, Zero's dash also feels really good, but X's is clunky, making me think its an intentional design choice since Zero relies on the saber alot more. Also no need to get mad XD, just opinions.
@zairrdvordenta7724
9 жыл бұрын
GenmaTheSamurai This isnt about opinions. Its pointless to talk to you if you cant notice how zero series is faster than x series. 1.Yeah X's dash feels a bit sluggish to Zero's in X4. 2.This is the big problem. Did the same keyboard become sticky ??? How can zero be sluggish in zero series. That is one of the basic maneuvers which doesnt require any effort.. Either you didnt use dash too much or your control layout is messed up. Not only because Gba consumes very few space compared to X games. Eg Z4: 8mb X8:gb. Aside that zero's armor in lighter than x series.

7:31 actually, all directions are climbing tree if I remember correctly. You're supposed use the momentum when jumping by pressing diagonally up and then only pressing a direction for a midair attack. And if you are in front of a tree when you press a direction you grab the tree. Yeah, it was a bit ridiculous, but I still love the game.

Mega Man X is out unfortunately. We know its your favorite but lets just see more! It would be cool to kind of take a time trip through the years and see the improvements(mostly) and just would be a great thing to watch! Pretty solid analysis. Personally, as a kid who used to play a lot of nes and snes games, i enjoyed the difficulty of the mega man being moderate. Paired with excellent controls it encouraged me to keep trying to learn and finish all the bosses - unlike most other games of that era, whos abhorring difficulty only had you give up in frustration and never run the damn thing again.

Mega Man was one of my favorites due to the music, the stage select, and the power-ups. I played the first game when Mega Man III was announced. I had played the first 5 games before I gave it up. I was even able to follow the storyline. When the 6th game came out with TWO boss encounters per stage selection, I got confused as to what they were trying to do with the game. Since I never owned a SNES, I never played 6-8 either. I haven't even downloaded Mega Man 9. Maybe...someday.

1. As good as it is, several games predated it in variety such as Ultima 3-4, Castlevania, Darius, Dragon Warrior etc. 2. Nothing special, but it sufficed and the cutscenes were pretty nice. Good point about 'silent' storytelling in the NES games, as well as the stage select. 3. Sure, though it wasn't exactly well balanced early on. The subweapons made bosses too easy and there were plenty of trial & error moments. 4. It did have an annoying delay at first, but with 2 it got really good.

I love the series but I have a few issues with arguments 1. How does the music perfect the side-scrolling genre? It should apply to games in general and not specifically to one genre 2. Same to with the silent story
@Gunslingerwashere
9 жыл бұрын
Music perfected the side-scrolling genre by giving a sense on what to feel. If it was rough, you'd be like "Oh crap, gotta shoot!" and if it was calm, you'd probably be given a sense of a chance. Silent stories make great games because it's not like somebody mashed on their keyboard and made a very long story with a crappy narrator. There was just some text to read and made the game not very plot-heavy.

Classic is actually my favorite by far (every single main game in that series, even 8 in a lot of ways, is a fucking masterpiece where as only X1-3 and sorta 4 and 8 are that good in my eyes, though X1 really IS pretty much the best video game ever) and I really love how much respect this video has for it. Also I'm hardcore back into pokemon lately for x/y so yes go make videos about it.
