You didn't tell us the most important thing: How Much? Also, you need to get some solar panels. 300watt or more each panel and set yourself up for worry-free dry camping. I used to do what you are doing in a Lance from the 80s with a 3/4 Chevy 4X4 full-size bed standard cab. That extra length of bed made for much more room. We learned (driving from San Diego to Maine in December) that the bigger propane bottles our Lance came with were priceless. When we would hit up a hotel, we could turn the thermostat down to around 40 Fahrenheit and the camper would stay warm all night and nothing froze in the 0 degree weather. The dual batteries like you have kept the fan on the furnace going all night. You may want to look into a safe way to carry more propane. Please keep u these great You Tubes. Thank You!

Just a couple of small reasons. 1. No crawling over someone if you have to get up in the middle of the night. 2. We camp in the cold a lot and with North/South each person experiences the same temperature in bed. With East/West one person has a cold wall on three sides and the other person is close to the furnace. 3. With North/South we sleep on either side the roof lift push bar and end up with more head room.

Thank you. I also appreciate the straight forward, informative, no fluff video. We are considering the Hawk shell for our 2016 Tundra double cab. Love my truck, but if I had it to do over again, I would get a 3/4 ton at least. That said, out truck is too new with a lot of life so gotta make it work and the shell with a few ad ons seem perfect. One specific question I had was about the bed comfort. We are older (57 :)) and having a decent mattress is important. How much room do you have to add to the existing cushions before it starts to interfere with the top when folded down? Thanks again!
@NorthernExplorerOverland
3 жыл бұрын
The mattress is better than anything you will sleep on in a ground tent but it doesn't compare with an inner spring mattress. There is about two to three inches of usable space above the mattress with the top down. Some people put a memory foam topper on the mattress. We will probably do the same. Because of the slide out, you would have to make sure there is room for the slide out section of memory foam topper as well. One more thing... it's a little bit of a climb to get into and out of bed. Since the FWC's don't have basements the bed is relatively high compared to the floor.
@rev1717
3 жыл бұрын
@@NorthernExplorerOverland Appreciate it! Yes, thought about the getting in/out as well. Assume the roll-over couch or even the side dinette (add ons for the shell) would add a cushion/higher vantage to step on making it easier getting up there. I personally would never do that. Takes way to long to load and unload. You would need to bring something for the camper to sit on while off of the truck. It just doesn't take that long to lower the roof and get it road ready. This camper is basically on my truck all summer so I would never feel the need to take it off for a week of driving around. That's me, your needs may be different. Plus you would have to have the four corner jacks on all the time.

i emailed the builder, they said they were designed to do that for the past 50 years and didnt plan on changing. Me i find significant changes to everything in the past 50 as technology gets better, more 3rd party devices are created, and people get smarter about products. as for keeping the tail gate on, it makes sense, some have built in steps, the tail gate itself is a platform, and the biggest reason to anyone who own a pickup would be the fact the bumper and tailgate get the dirtiest from road mist and dust. thus without tail gate all the road stuff goes on the slide-in or truck camper. Im sure there is an advantage if it weathers and looks bad, maybe they buy a new one, lol. anyhow, again, i appreciate the facts you presented. i may find another maker or go back to my original path of small travel trailer or class C and tow my vehicle, i like the idea of having a base camp setup while going out for the day or sight seeing, even though the class Bs look very nice and inviting but they are more fixed than slide in that can be left at the site. stay safe in your travels.

What are the pros of a camper like this vs a travel trailer?
@NorthernExplorerOverland
Жыл бұрын
The biggest pro as I see it is you aren't pulling a trailer. Parking is easier and you never have to worry about having room to turn around if you need to on a tight trail. Also, if you did needed to pull a trailer you still could. There are cons.... Travel trailers are usually a little cheaper and they give you a lot more living space for what you spend. Another con with the truck camper is payload capacity gets eaten up quickly. A truck will always be able to tow more that it can carry. It's just a personal choice. The places I go a travel trailer would not be good.
