On the foxes, it's another job but I use Stockholm tar (in the tin, not the spray can) on the neck & shoulders. I've only lost 1 lamb with it, using it for years now. That means getting to the lamb before the fox does, but with ye lambing indoors that's not a problem - all outdoor lambing here. To make it a bit easier I warm the tin in a water bath and use a 60ml syringe to transfer the tar from the tin into plastic bottles with "sports caps", makes it much tidier. I was asked to shoot for a lady that lost nearly 20 lambs in one week, I shot one vixen and she lost only one lamb the following week, shot another vixen and that was the end of the problem. I'd be concerned that the dog foxes in your place may have been wanting to draw food to vixens with cubs, maybe have those lads come back for another look soon as the vixens might venture out looking for a handy buffet. There used to be a Teagasc research farm up near Leenane years ago. I remember they had a 5 strand electric fence around that field, they reckoned they never lost a lamb out of it.

Hi Glynn yous are doing a great job in this weather. Some years ago I had fox problems. So I put out a couple of those flashing amber lights you see at roadworks. No more fox trouble after that. One year I moved the ewes. And lambs over beside a neighbour’s ground. At that time foxes were taking a lamb off his hoggets which lambed twins.I took over one of those amber beacons, after that he lost no more lambs.

Great video. Sheep farming is no easy task and it can be cruel at lambing time. Its hard to be patient with people who mostly see pictures of foxes on postcards but have no idea of how merciless and destructfull they can be. To see a pen of young hens wiped out or a flock of ducks or geese killed, would open the eyes of many a do-gooder. To lose newborn lambs is heart breaking, so don’t spend too much of your time defending your right to wipe out the foxes. Few fully appreciate the inordinate hardship associated with lambing a large flock of sheep and the effects of sleep deprivation over weeks. Its not a task for the frail. Thanks for sharing - more people need to know that farming is a tough call.

That was a pair of adult males. There will likely be one or more vixens with hungry cubs nearby. These mothers will be out hunting to get food for their cubs if the males from their mating are not around now to provide. The hunters need to come back over several nights in a two week period to clear a territory of all active adults. Any cubs left in dens after that will die of hunger.

@@jimmyjohnstone5878 it’s a battle for sure. Poor guys have already had a hard start trying to keep lambs alive without the foxes taking off with them. A guard dog would be more efficient than shooting them. There will always be more foxes. It also scares them off so the chances of the foxes needing to die is lessened. Althought the way they talk about the foxes in this video as if theyre maliscious monsters out to kill for fun is ridiculous. Its an animal. Its not a disney villain. They kill more than they need to because they have a habit of saving food for later.

It does surprise me that farmers aren’t using livestock guardian dogs in the fields with the ewes and lambs. Here in the US, sheep farmers worry about foxes, but depending on where they are, they may be also having to deal with coyotes, bears, cougars, and other large predators. In the western US, shepherds have had very good results with Anatolian Shepherds, Kangal Shepherds, Maremma Sheepdogs, and Great Pyrenees dogs, on huge grazing ranges. It might be worth looking for livestock guardian dogs to protect your sheep outside in all weather.
