Flying FPV drones is the closest experience to real flying while being on the ground. Proximity/small drones are such a fun to use but there is no margin for error. No collision avoidance. Limited signal coverage (1-2 km). It is a challenge and adrenaline boost at the same time. Finding good spots to fly is not that easy too.
These drones fly fast and can damage property or harm people. So you need to know the area, no much people around.
Due to the high speed you need to know the topography as well. Fast turns won’t save you from hitting an hidden tree. Reaction times are milliseconds due to the compressed vision in the googles.
Flying in winter, during peak season, in a spot with fresh snow and enough area for a decent flight is an additional challenge.
All nice spots are close to ski lifts or restaurants. Some spots can be reached by car but if you want to be in a remote place you need to walk or ski off pist.
If you ski, the logistic of carrying all equipment plus your normal ski equipment needs some care. It should not be too cold: propellers could freeze and lock in flight, or batteries could drain faster than warned by the googles. Right filter on the camera for nailing the exposure, right video settings or major disappointment when you are back to the desk!
That’s why editing this video was so rewarding. I lived what you see, I can still hear the light breeze and cracking of the fresh snow around me, feel the adrenaline of fast turns, the blue sky, the stunning views.
I love the Dolomites. Flying FPV there is a feast of the senses.
Hope you enjoy!
