Nice way of expressing your experience with the FM9. I have used FAS for several decades now, yes I have tried all the others at one time or another but nothing ever compared to FAS gear. For what you get it's worth every penny imo. I'm no computer nerd and always found it to be fairly easy but if you want to deep dive everything is there for that. It's also nice to have Leon for any reference you may need, he's the best! I hope you enjoy it and create whatever you hear in your head, it's such an awesome modeler, nothing really comes close. I think you’re right about validation. I’ve seen it with Amps, but not like it is with modelers. Not sure why. I do believe there is no single (this is the best modeler). Just like everyone finds different amps to their liking, it is the same with modelers. Everyone’s ears are different. I’ve tried fractal a couple years ago and didn’t like the sounds, and hated the interface. I’ve played through many Helix products and found the sounds lackluster. Have very good playing friends who make it sound good. When the Quad Cortex came out, I thought I was crazy for buying it, knowing I wouldn’t like it. 2 years later I still own it. Gigged for a year with it, and have recorded with it, can’t imagine being without it. Go figure.

USB 2.0 interface on the FM9 is not the source of any latency you are experiencing. The audio for the FM9 is 24bit, 48kHz - 8 channels (4 stereo pairs) is just shy of 1 Mbps - double that for inputs and outputs - add in more headroom for MIDI over USB and FM9Edit control. Let's say 4Mbps total thru put. That's less than 1% of USB 2.0 data thru put of 480 Mbps...

As someone who owned the rack AxeFX III and downsized to the FM3, I would say that for most guitar players who think they need the FM9, the FM3 turbo is probably sufficient. Not only do you get essentially everything the FM9/rack unit has, you get a way more manageable footprint for your pedal board, around half the price, can easily expand the switching with midi or simple 2 button switches, still lots of processing power (vs my non turbo FM3). I was on the FM9 waiting list but after looking at the pedalboad layout thing on pedal playground's website, my Novo 28 board would have room for just 1 pedal to the side and that's it.. or go to an even bigger board. I didn't want to do either of those things. I think (myself included) we guitar players think we need more than we really do and I grabbed that rack unit and the 6 button controller because more is better. Well I only used like 1 or two amps and only a small hand full of effects and that's it. All the routing options were nice but after looking at the I/O of the FM3, I felt like it was sufficient for my routing needs and I was right. I lucked out by selling when there was a waiting list for all the fractal gear and was able to make a little profit from selling my rack unit and controller and after I got a lightly used FM3 for a little under $900 bucks shipped, I found my presets didn't even come close to eating up all the CPU and the I/O still facilitated running a vocal mic in and out to the board and a guitar in and out to the board and out to an FRFR behind me. I never ran any patches with blending multiple amps or cabinets or tons of ambient effects that are CPU hogs or anything like that. I play in a rock cover band and got by for nearly a decade with just a silver jubilee, wah and delay and a touch of chorus. Nice and simple. I programmed my Morningstar 6 button midi controller to control the FM3 so moving from the 6 button FC6 with the rack unit to the FM3 and the morningstar controller was a 1 to 1 change and I have 3 extra buttons on the FM3 I can use for whatever else and obviously those 2 extra pedal jacks for 4 more physical switches. I think the one main drawback to the FM3/Turbo is only being able to use 1 reverb block. I kinda got around that (With Leon's helpful video) by using the Plex delay block. Besides that, I think with the extra CPU power on the Turbo, the FM3 is an incredible bargain when you lay out the price and shortcomings of the competition.

You should watch the video where I explained why I chose the FM9 after many recommended that an Axe FX was necessary for a studio application. It's linked in the end card of this video. Your comment resonates a lot with me. I’ve been wanting to jump onto the modeling wagon and see if it would work for me, especially since I recently started playing live. I spent a lot of time considering the FM9 vs. the FM3, and finally decided on the FM3 Mk II Turbo last December, for pretty much the reasons you mention: price, portability, sound quality equal to the bigger units, etc. That said, I still double guess my decision some times, mainly because of the amount of switches. The FM9 has all I will ever need and then some, but at double the size and at a much higher price. My sweet spot would be an FM5 😂. Or I need to get creative with the foot switches.
@FastRedPonyCar
8 ай бұрын
@@javiermp81 you can buy the FC6 and put the FM3 behind you on stage in its own little pelican type case or on a stool. For me, a 2 button switch on the side gives me 5 switches which is all I need. Having 2 switch jacks means I could add 2 more if I needed. Leon Todd has a video showing some custom 3D printed switches that are shaped exactly like the FM3 that you can use hook and loop tape or something like that to attach to the side of the unit. They’re pretty slick.

The "confusing" part of this particularly interested me. A few years ago, I acquired an FX8 when I was trying to sell an amp online and the interested party offered me the FX8 as an exchange. The reason they gave is that the FX8 was just way too complicated for them. Well, I came to understand what they meant. The first few days of playing around with it really messed with my head, but I just kept exploring the unit, and the manual, and after about two weeks I finally had it set up in a way that meets pretty much all I needed from it. And I have barely changed it since.... just because I haven't needed to. So yes, as you say, you do need to invest the time. But it's worth it. I now have an FM9 on the way and I'm really excited, this time, to be going through another, similar learning curve, because I know how rewarding it's going to be when I get there. :-)

I've had my FM9 30 days now, and I'm going through all the same steps as you, the workflow was strange at first, Layouts were the hurdle for me, once I got a handle on that and the various bypass states of the blocks I was off to the races. For live use a couple of stand-in switches and a treadle and it's all I'll need.

Still prefer my high-end pedals (The Duellist, Golden Reverb, Immerse, Flashback Triple Delay, Trio+, RC500 Looper, etc.) Very easy to click an effect on or off. In reality, most of us will always have ~2-3 pedals always on. Then based on the tune, we can quickly stomp on 2-3 pedals, to get very close to the tone that is needed. If you need more then that you are too focused on gadgets and probably don't play very well. The best musicans sound great unplugged with an acoustic guitar. I saw Chris Cornell play and incredible 2 hours set this way. Also, having an external looper also makes life much easier. I have two- the RC500 and the Trio+ (+ means Looper addded in v2.) I had the FM9. It was nice and all but a PIA mostly to make any changes and to access stuff. They need to update the UI like yesterday. It has most the goodness inside- still better then anything Line6 but if you can't access things easily, it has less value to me. I am not saying modelers have no value. Having ready to go patches can be convenient when playing sets. I do like the Set List feature as well. If the UI was better I might add one to the party. I would prefer it also to be a bit smaller form factor and even more powerful...like a FM6, not FM3.

What's amazing is the choices we have today. I still love the real thing...amps and pedals will always be here as long as I'm doing this. But I found a great hybrid solution that works really well in my studio. And I do think modelers can make players lazy. It all has its place if used effectively...in my opinion ;)
@MOAB-UT

@@LonelyRocker True. I have an ultimate set up. Had a $1,845 FM9. Sounded great but annoying to make changes. With pedals you step on it and it's there. WIth modelers you have to deep menu dive- not that into doing that. I just want to play. My tone is just as good for the most part. Modelers don't really make lazy players IMO. The training course for the complex FM9 is 14 hours/$99. They are simply different. If you require consistent tone and want set lists, etc., modelers do have their place I suppose. In the meantime, I am very happy with my pedalboard and 5 amps including a hand-wired tube amp. I agree- they all have their place and it is good to have options.

Thanks! You don't necessarily need a new interface. When I moved to my Mac Studio I went from Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 4. Thunderbolt 3 is the same connection as 4 but 2 is different. But I got adapters and continued to use my Thunderbolt 2 interface without issue. In the case of the Helix and the Fractal I got the USB 2.0 printer to USB-C adapter (USB-C is compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and 4 ports). What I did buy was a Thunderbolt 4 HUB that gives me a lot of extra USB and Thunderbolt Ports. But many of the devices are forward and backward compatible so it may not be necessary to buy new devices other than adapters. Good luck!

It’s getting popular with lazy musicians who don’t want to or can’t carry a bunch of equipment. So you could just plug in the FM9 then go into the appollo Twin interface so you would get a HiZ input and a mic input with phantom power? Would this be a good way to set it up?!?
@LonelyRocker
8 ай бұрын
Not sure that would be ideal. If the apollo had a s/pdif input that would work great and you wouldn't have to use any of the ports on the apollo...which doesn't have many. But it doesn't as far as I know. You could take the outputs of the FM9 and go into the apollo but that would consume the only two inputs (aside from the instrument input). Your guitar would still plug into the FM9. I think your best bet is to have them both hooked up via USB/Thunderbolt (whichever one you have) And just switch interfaces in your software as you require.

Used the Fractal Universe for the last 5 years, It has some real flaws now as the others have caught up !!. Biggest failure to me was the Scenes. If you wanted on a different scene o adjust the parameter of say an amp volume , you either had to use a sep channel or use a scene controller. Madness.. All the opposition now can seamlessly switch patches and can make scene adjustments with no extra workarounds. The next level for this will be that it can profile and can do all the above seemlessly !! I await the FM........( you cant beat the sounds tho !!)
