Becoming a fragrance newbie at the late age of around 63 (two years ago) I am happy to say that I avoided all these errors. Perhaps age brings a certain wisdom even when one plunges into a completely unknown field. I've got variety across a range, all my fragrances are in dry, cool places (still in their boxes, too), I've been extremely careful taking my time, testing frags whenever possible, even multiple times, before buying, and hunting for the best prices I could get.

As recent as two weeks ago found myself clearing out fragrances I never reached for it anymore. So, I gave them to my nephew. Now, after being back collecting for about 3 years my selections are more refined and I do samples now rather than blind buying.
@thatguy-sp9vv
Жыл бұрын
Purchasing a lot of bottles in a short time was my biggest mistake. I used to watch every single top 10 video on youtube, make excel sheets about them, and buy the "best" ones. In 12 months, I almost had 100 fragrance bottles. Most of them were similar to each other. A lot of blue fragrances, many "sexy" scents, and a lot of flankers from the same lines. At one point I had EDT, edp, PARFUM and Elixir versions of Sauvage. For example, I had Oud Satin Mood, Naxos, Grand Soir, and Oud for Greatness as an important night/wedding fragrance. Then I realised I only attend 5 to 10 weddings every year, and it would be incredibly hard to pick one, because I wanted to wear all of them. So I decided categorising like you suggested. 1 for daily(office/school) usage, 1 for important/big nights, 1 for dates/evenings, 1 for very high heat/summer. I had to sell all of the bottles and it took a lot of time and effort. But now I only have 6 bottles. Collecting is very addicting and I think it is important to raise awareness about obsessively buying. Thank you for the video.
@thatguy-sp9vv
Жыл бұрын
In addition to that, I think the most important category is "daily usage". Because lets be honest, no one is going to have a date night that often. 1-2 dates every week? a 100mL would last you 2-3 years. 50 big nights(weddings, expensive dinners, fancy events) per year? A 100ml would last you at least 3 years.

When i just started my collection back in 2021, i had only 9 fragances and 7 of them were party/beast mode fragances lmao. I only had one blue fragance and one for the summer, and that made my collection pretty redundant because of how many súper strong fragances in had at the time.

I am a struggling newbie. Because of the need to try fragrances, the cost of samples soon mounts up, where you're left thinking that "I could've bought whole bottles for the price I've just paid for some samples - and is it cost effective to keep buying samples?" Also, your likes and dislikes change so quickly on the early stages of the learning curve. Mistakes will be made, but that's how we learn

I have made the mistakes of blind buying, not using discounters, and not being on the FB groups. While I was getting good deals from discounters towards the beginning, I wasn't getting the best because I wasn't on these groups, and I resent that. I'm not saying I hate discounters, though. Discounters are awesome. You often times have to wait on a deal from these groups and make sure your sellers are legit, and you don't have to do that with discounters. However, I could have saved even more money than I did

l have a sixth that l heard a few days ago which, at first, l outright dismissed, but l've grown to accept it. l'm about to dip my toe in this world of fragrances (having had only smeeled about 3 fragrances in my whole life, two of which are the most-sold don't-need-to-name-them-obvious ones) and l could easily make the mistake of excitedly buying a 200ml bottle of versace pour homme, which shouldn't be a mistake in itself as it's a fairly good fragrance (l'm told), but if all goes to plan with my life, l should be purchasing tens of fragrances in the next 12 months, making said 200ml bottle last me for a few decades as l'd have other bottles which l can use just as much as my hypothetical versace... better to buy a 50ml and if you finish it quicker than expected, then it wouldnt be too bad to buy a 100ml bottle.
