The base gasket is not what fails first on the OCOD. The pleats fail inside the filter because of the cardboard endcaps. I like and have used the Ultra and the Titanium, because they have metal endcaps and high quality media. Good filters. But I would not use the Extra Guard or Tough Guard on any vehicle I cared about, just my $0.02. I'd rather just use an OEM filter than the OCOD.

With green mandates being pushed to destroy gas/oil engines, I suspect that the japanese lube tech was honest about 0w16,0w20 oils with extended oil changes destroying engine oil rings and ring/cylinder damage in normal driving world wide causing excessive oil burning. Say at 100°f temp. He said to follow honest oil use temp charts. 5w30 is a better option. Or 10w40 in desert driving . Do not blame engine manufacturing for gov. Mandated foolishness. @@desolategrey Everybody knows that that's the 'orange can of death' you're talking about. The Ultra and Titanium aren't even in the same class if you ever compared them. That 'orange can' IS absolutely a 3000mile filter. People run them well past the life of the filter or change intervals, yeah then there's problems. It's really a barely adequate basic filter but will last 3-5k if the engines in decent shape.

@JA-rn5qv
2 жыл бұрын
Titanium has wire backing (since it still has dual layer fully synthetic filter media) whereas the Ultra uses a blended filter media and no wire backing since the blended media in the Ultra has a stiff layer for support. The Ultra has smaller, standard type punch holes in the base plate (in some cases slots rather than round holes) whereas the Titanium has larger, tear-drop shaped openings in the base plate to facilitate higher flow rates of some demanding applications such as high output truck engines and high output performance vehicles. The blended media of the Ultra does offer a bit better filtration rate at the 10 micron level versus the fully synthetic media of the Titanium but the fully synthetic media is still top notch as well. FYI - Although the Titanium is supposed to be a an Advanced Auto exclusive, you can order a Titanium through the Walmart website at a lower price than getting it through Advanced Auto but when you look it up on the Walmart website you need to look it up by the model number (ie: FS4386) and there may not be a photo of the filter but the description will be the same. For example a Titanium FS4386 if I were to order through Avanced Auto would be $15.79 plus shipping but the same Titanium through the Walmart website is $12.63 with free shipping to the closest Walmart location to you. www.walmart.com/ip/FRAM-Titanium-Titanium-Spin-on-Oil-Filter-Ideal-for-Synthetic-Oil-Protection-up-to-20-000-miles/145169190

@JA-rn5qv

The wire screen was there because the previous fully synthetic filter media was very soft and could not stand up to the pressures that occur within the filter without the wire backing. Fram recently switched to a new blended synthetic/cellulose filter media for the Ultra which has a rigid layer and thus no longer needs the wire backing. The new blended synthetic/cellulose filter media offers a slightly better filtering rate between 10 to 20 microns versus the previous softer synthetic media. Titanium retains the wire backing because it's actually designed to withstand extra high oil flow/pressures applications which is why it also has redesigned oil hole inlets although for the average street car that's not necessary but they still have it as an option for people who want it. Bottom line is the new Ultra set up filters even better than the previous version.

Your better off changing your oil every 5,000 miles with a cheap filter like STP or Supertech and a mid-grade oil such as Quaker State. If by using your logic that the box says the filter is good for 20,000 miles, and you believe that, then why not pair it with a 20,000 mile oil and just trust that everything is fine? It only costs $30.00 to $40.00 to change your oil with a good midgrade oil and a cheaper (but not poorly constructed) oil filter. Depending on your engine, I would say max OCI is 7,500 miles. Yeah, 5,000 could be considered OCD but if you don't drive much that's still only twice a year. 10,000 miles is just too long. Unless you want to go thru the trouble of sending your oil out for a UOA to see what's going on with the oil in YOUR SPECIFIC engine (every one is different) just change the dang oil. I think with modern oils and filter improvements, 5,000 is a little too frequent, but 7,500 miles is a good compromise. It's just such cheap insurance why not just do it?
