Perhaps I'm alone in in this, but watching the "Les sucettes" video-clip actually gave me night terrors. The contrast between Gall's innocence and Gainsbourg's cruel, perverse abuse of it made the video macabre and disturbing, the black and white only helped to make it even more sinister and nightmarish. We might have become less naive and more cynical, but what is disturbing to see is how some people, for the sake of making a few wisecracks will not think twice about being downright cruel.

In the story of this song, something that is always forgotten is that France Gall had, like most people, parents and other adults around her. Which of them warned her ? none. Especially, at these times, her father who was a director in a big French radio station, so he was someone able to understand the lyrics, or that could have people around to explain him. Today, in front this story, those who must be ashamed are the adults who were around her.

It could have been her father was himself naive or uncaringly intended to sabotage her success . Either way the song is one I enjoy with out thinking of it’s double meaning.

@@Lyndanet When the song appeared on the radio, of course all the French audience was naive, and didn't catch the double meaning, including me (I was too young). But there was a special world, called "show business" were the double meaning couldn't "not be seen". Ok, you are right, I can't proove that people around France Gall wouldn't be as naive as her. I just "think" that's not possible that in this show business world, no one (including her father) didn't knew who was Gainsbourg and so thought to took care of France Gall : they totally leaved her alone with the woolf, because she could bring money, that's my opinion. Today, we (and I) have pleasure to hear this song, including the double meaning. But to be honnest, it would be less "perverse" to have had this song to be sung by a women who understood what she sung. On the other hand, that wouldn't be what we love about the provocation side of Gainsbourg, to make a puritanian audience to love... a song about sex. That's what we love with Gainsbourg, but anyway France Gall had to suffer to not be protected by adults that should have protect her, that's how I feel the whole thing. :)

No, she was 18, not 20, when she recorded this song. No, people CAN be educated about history without having themselves lived at the time in question. No, all this is not just speculation. The times WERE very diffferent in France back then. The proof: even their National TV And Radio Committee (or some such) who had been banning risqué songs from radio play left and right, didn't have a problem with Les Sucettes -- because they didn't see the double entendre either.

I understand and agree with what you are saying about the cruelty of Gainsbourg taking advantage of Gall's innocence, but to be honest, I highly doubt, even if this happened today, Gainsbourg would have been convicted of any crime. You have to remember, Gall was of legal age at the time, 18, which I believe was also the legal age in France in the mid 1960's. Not only that, what would you accuse Gainsbourg of - sexual innuendo in a song? By that time in his life Serge Gainsbourg was a popular and noted composer/singer/songwriter in France and much of Europe, and his popularity was only gaining, as he shortly after this starred in a movie with Brigitte Bardot, after which he began his long term relationship with Jane Birkin. It was also around this time he composed and sang Je Taime Moi Non Plus, which forever will link him with both Bardot and Birkin, and is likely his most famous piece. Later in life, he wrote and sang a song, shooting a video with his daughter, Charlotte, (by Birkin) entitled "Lemon Incest." Gainsbourg loved to use double meanings/play on words/sexual innuendo/puns/etc in his music, as it made it interesting. Still, I think what you are getting at is that if this happened today, there would be likely be an uproar about taking advantage of someone's innocence so publicly, and there would likely either be a public apology, maybe with some type of compensation, and/or a boycott of his music. But those times were different, and the legal system NEVER seems to stand up for victim, then or now.

The parents (at least the father) pushed her into this career. My assumption would be that they cared mostly about whether this song, written by someone with already some fame to his name, would help her gain fame. I would suspect that they expected the double entendre to attract a larger public, in fact, than some completely innocent song would have.

I think this song is one of the greatest pop songs in any language. It is a work of genius in every respect, including the production and choice of artist, France Gall, who was an adorable innocent. It is a shame that she was emotionally hurt and even wounded because of this song. She suffered for this art at the hands of a gentle, buffoonish, wounded genius. Ideally, someone should have let her in on the secret, as a collaborator and sold her on the song's merits, but could they have?

France got her whole carrier, being clueless but gifted with songs from amazing composers. She got very lucky all in all.

everybody seems to make fun of her and say she is stupid well I'm a guy and I'm 18 and honestly I wish we had girls today as innocent as France Gall was. What I mean is just try and find an 18 year old girl today who is not an "expert" on sex. They may be stupid about it and may not completely understand it but chances are they have already had sex or at least know about different sexual acts and things like that. I do not believe in protecting your children from what happens in the real world

Wow thank you for the lecture!.. I just heard France a month ago and when I heard that I was like damn innocent girls and they're dirty little secret ways.. but I guess there's something more to it. I love that Gall!

I really love Serge Gainsbourg and his music, but poor France! Also, how did she grow her hair out so fast? At Eurovision she had a little bob, but then it got to like 2 feet long a few years later....

@imshadi It's ironic that "Les Succettes" is part of the reason the innocence was lost. That note can only be hit one time, then it's a different world.

@thompsi99 I don't think her father knew or thought about it. After all 1966 was another time, before porno, and there were many songs with "childish" lyrics in pop music back then..
