This has to be one of my most unique plane spotting videos ive made!
Welcome to the beautiful island of Saint-Pierre 🇵🇲, the capital of the Saint-Pierre and Miquelon islands!
Saint-Pierre Airport is the main hub Air Saint Pierre; the flag carrier of Saint Pierre and Miquelon! The airline offers flights connecting Saint Pierre to
multiple Canadian destinations using an ATR 42. The airline also operates a Cessna F406 that is mainly used to connect Saint-Pierre with Miquelon; the only other airport located within the overseas collective.
Saint-Pierre Airport serves as an important gateway connecting these islands with the rest of the world (via Canada). The airport also receives seasonal 737 flights connecting the islands with Paris.
Despite these islands being a French overseas collective, they are located only 26km from Canada!
-- Old airport tour --
The current airport that serves the island was only opened in 1999, prior to that the town of Saint-Pierre actually had another airport that was in service between 1965 to 1999! Despite the old airport closing operations over 20 years ago, many parts of the airport infrastructure can still be found today such as parts of the runway, the old terminal and control tower as well as some maintenance buildings.
The facilities that remain serve as an interesting glimpse into the town's past. This was the original hub for Air Saint Pierre where they operated very classic aircraft such as the DC-3, HS-748 Hawker and Beechcraft 18.
The reason for the closure of the airport and construction of a brand new one was mainly due to the old airport constraints and unable to expand.
The old airport runway (11/29) was stuck at only 4,100ft long while the current runway (26/08) is at 5,900ft. There is still talk to extending the current runway even further which is possible. One of the goals of the new airport was the possibility to be able to accommodate jet service. This was to one day open a non stop flight between Paris and Saint-Pierre which would not have been possible at all with the
old airport.
This new route finally launched in 2018 providing seasonal 737-700 service between Saint-Pierre and Paris operated by ASL Airlines on behalf of Air Saint Pierre!
Large parts of what use to be the runway have been redeveloped into residential buildings but the 2 thresholds of the runway still remains and are used by the locals.
This is the beginning of what was runway 11, due to the large mountain ranges around the airport; runway 11 had a displaced threshold. As you see, the runway markings remain including the displaced
threshold markings (the arrows).
Enjoy!
