I work in foodservice in the US, I know this is not true for every establishment, but we have very strict protocol on food and food prep safety. Floors, walls, ceilings, and food prep surfaces all have a separate brush, rag, sanitizer bottle, and mop buckets for each step of disinfection. The dishwasher temps, ph, and free chlorine PPM are checked every 15 minutes, and every internal temperature is checked in each and every meatball of hamburger patty. If you don’t fallow protocol in our facility, you are fired on the spot. It’s almost like Gordon Ramsay is my boss, but he isn’t.

Here in America, It's plastic mac n cheese with salads that use the worst quality of lettuce, expired milk and an apple that has many wormhole in them. All served on styrofoam trays and cheap, easily breakable plastic forks. Also the school I go to, refuses to give us knives because knives are "weapons." Whenever we had Salisbury steak (a week old frozen hamburger with powdery gravy) it was so hard to cut the "meat" with a fork.

French food is only a brand and have nothing to do with quality. It's a way better than american beacuse american food is the worst junk on Earth. I am polish and I can''t find good quality bread, fresh vegetables, different kind of sausages and meet in the western Europe. In polish market you can find differnt kind of sausages. In France you must go to the butcher, but even there you won't find so many kinds like in polish shop. In the wstern Europe there is a porblem with fresh vegetables, good quality butter, real mayonaise, real mustard, real milk, good apples, natural eggs aqnd other things. In Poland there are points everywhere where you can do general.comprehensive shopping with good quality food. In western Europe this is a problem. French cousine is famous, but there are very good polish cousine, and other cousines. So that's very unfair to underrate some countries beacuse they have a brand and are famous in the world, considerating a fact that esatern food is still a way more natural than western. It's changing beacuse of European's Union directives. French are agnry beacuse of US domination. The same way East Europeans are angry beacuse of German or French domination in Europe(concern's,licences, technology and laws).

Being a school chef is a very respectable profession in France. My public high school's chef was quite famous and served us meals such as braised rabbit, squid ink pasta and things like that, always with an appetizer, cheese, fruit or a dessert, and unlimited bread. The teachers ate the same food, plus a glass of wine, lol. I spent my middle school years in the US and got made fun so bad because my mom usually packed leftovers or a slice of quiche and salad for my lunch. I don't know why, but the last couple of days I've been watching videos about school lunches from over the world, and one thing I noticed in common is that other countries see their food as another way to introduce children to their culture. I think if the school lunch program was structured quite differently in American public schools, it could become a way to introduce kids to the many different cultures that coexist here. So many of my friends and I have strong memories of bringing food from our culture to school for lunch and getting relentlessly teased by other students, but if they were exposed to those foods from an early age, it could foster acceptance and understanding. Not to mention it would make for better tasting and more varied food.

The whole country is corrupt; that's why the school system is fucked.

No more fishes and veggies " but now as a grown up I realize how lucky we are here. Cause it's true that at every lunches we have an "entrée" a warm main dish, cheese, and yogurts or desserts. Everything is good and healthy. We have on average one hour to eat and if we want more, we go at the end of the line to get more. And its not that expensive.

It's simply a system that the school board (and government) had let to go out of control. I'm sure back in the day American schools had decent prepared lunches for children before the advent of fast food and frozen foods. It's only in the past few decades that things started to slide downhill, schools started taking shortcuts and the quality of food started deteriorating. And once you reduce funding for school lunch programs, what do you get? Crap.

My grandsons (5 and 13) are both in a French School. School starts on 6 September, 2021so I checked on their different school website, the menu is published until 22 October (then Autumn vacation starts). Primary school every day: 1 starter, one main course with either fresh poultry, meat or fish, 1 vegetarian dish, one cheese different every day, and for dessert yoghurt, seasonal fruit, or fruit salad. Once in a while, the children get French fries, cakes. Secondary school every day: choice between 3 starters, 3 main courses - 2 with poultry, meat or fish, and 1 vegetarian- then a choice of 2 trimmings, French fries only once in while, a cheese, and for dessert 2 choices.

I'm french and this always seemed normal to me (although the first one is definitely a little more on the high end side). We also have sometimes pizza slices as entrees or hamburger and fries as main course but they were always honestly always very good. The desserts were also great and typically french like ile flottante or crème brûlée. And of course we always had a couple of baguette slices! When I saw on the internet that Americans got nothing but tiny ass bagels and a carton of milk I was so shocked 😰

And as Americans who have a job, we have pretty much no choice but to “gobble our food.” When I worked a job at a big grocery chain, we got a measly 15 minute break. It’s not good for you to eat so fast but at that job I had no choice. I’m an Amazon DSP driver now. We have to take our unpaid 30 minute lunch break by 1:30 PM or else it’s an automatic write up. My DSP is the last one to leave the warehouse and on most days I don’t get to my route before noon. The earliest I’ve ever gotten to a route is 11:30 AM.

So true, I'm french and I remember it was exactly like this. But mainly, the lunch part was a time to share, to be with your friends, to talk. And at home it was the same, dinner was family time, no TV, everybody ate at the same time, we would share what we had done for the day etc.. I have relatives from the US and when I went there I was so shoked by the way everybody ate.. None of them ate at the same time, there was no "family time" everybody ate "when they were hungry" (as they claimed). And all "fast food" like pizza, burgers, fries.. And in front of the TV.. I guess it's cultural differences but it's so shoking for me.

I wish my family took food more seriously. I am American and while we don't typically buy fast food, but my brothers usually eat processed things (Frozen pizza, processed snacks, sugary soda). We all just eat, as you said, "while we are hungry". I absolutely hate the way that we handle and think of food as in America. I simply cannot go a day without having to eat something processed because I have nothing else to eat. When I go shopping I look for local meats, but all I find is meat from thousands of miles away in shiny packaging from corn-fed cattle. Its sad. I wish I could be fortunate enough to live in France.

I remember the canteen back at school in France had 4 main counters- your salad or entree, a massive cheese selection, puddings and fruit, and then the mains. Where you got your cutlery there was also a massive pile of sliced baguette, and a another tub of pasta or rice. You could just take as much extra as you wanted. In winter they added a huge urn of (slightly watery) soup. I wouldn't say the food was gourmet but you never went hungry.

@@jamwither9847 So much for "richest country" in the world. They don't have money for this but plenty of them for the rich and the dirty wars they fight.

Actually, FLOTUS suggested that each school be outfitted with a chef. This is somewhat navie. Lots of people are making money off public schools. And I'm sure the people who supply public schools with overprice crap would lobby against fresh nutritious food being served to students.

France pays higher taxes for free gourmet lunch while in America we pay the lowest taxes possible so that means schools have $0.90 to spend per a meal

I grew up in France and I can tell you that the lunches served at school were and are still very good. French kids and pupils are indeed very lucky.

I live in the Netherlands where there isn't much of a food culture like in France. We were supposed to eat the maggoty whole wheat bread that we took to school in our lunchbox every day. The only foods that you could buy in schools were snickers/cola's from vending machines. And some schools had culinary stuff like fried junkfood. So that's what people would eat if they didn't bring their bread or threw it in the trash because it didn't taste good. These French lunches make us look like a bunch of dark age barbarians.

In my school in Paris; St Michel de Picpus (that was 20+ years ago), we had 3 canteens, the regular like this one, a pizza shack and a burger shack. The last two were novelties in the French system and the first year, kids stormed them. For about a week, because after that, they all got back to the regular canteen.
