40:10 Rivalry with Charles V
Louis XII is the son of the poet Charles of Orléans and Marie of Cleves. Educated by Louis XI, he was forced to marry his daughter: Jeanne de France. Louis of Orléans opposed the regency of Anne de Beaujeu who ruled the country during the minority of Charles VIII (Mad War). Defeated, Louis d'Orléans was imprisoned for three years in a fortress. He was released by Charles VIII and participated with him in the First Italian War. Charles VIII dies without an heir, Louis of Orléans is declared king of France. Louis XII annuls his marriage to Joan of France and marries Anne of Brittany, the widow of his predecessor. After conquering the Duchy of Milan, the French armies were defeated and Louis XII had to renounce his claims to Italy. He resumed hostilities and was victorious at Ravenna but again lost his territories. His cousin, François I, succeeds him.

Son of Charles of Angoulême and Louise of Savoy, François I succeeded in 1515 to his cousin Louis XII, whose daughter Claude he married. With the victory of Marignan, Francis I reconquers the Milanese. The power of Charles V and the threat of the kingdom being encircled by his rival's possessions pushed him to initiate hostilities against the emperor after having vainly sought the support of Henry VIII of England. Having become a widower, he remarried Eleanor of Habsburg, the sister of Charles V. François I is undoubtedly one of the builders of the modern state in France. He reorganized state finances and reformed justice through the Ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts (1539), which notably required legal documents to be written in French. Through the concordat of Bologna (1516), he ensured the appointment of archbishops, bishops and abbots of the kingdom. The King also favored Renaissance art, which flourished in the construction and decoration of royal residences (Blois, Chambord, Fontainebleau), where Francis I attracted and commissioned Italian artists (Leonardo da Vinci, the Rosso , the Primaticce). He encouraged translations by humanists and founded the future Collège de France. When he died in 1547, he was succeeded by his son Henry II.
