We need to get more reactions to South African music! I would HIGHLY recommend the one and only Theuns Jordaan and his beautiful song "Soos Bloed". Pretty please mate. Theuns was a national treasure even after his sad passing three years ago.

I'm the Bram that requested this video. I didn't include any details in the request, but I'll add some info in why I requested this song. I'm Dutch and I study Dutch Language and Culture in Leiden, The Netherlands. I did a subject about Afrikaans, where we learned much about the closely related languages. I learned how to read and speak Afrikaans by listening to Afrikaans music and also by reading books. This song really stuck with me, because of the power and passion you feel in their voices. There is also a beautiful edition of this song sung by the Stellenbosch choir in Varsity Sing. As far as I get it, it's about a fight in a relationship, that they have reconciled, because they found each other again. There are a lot more beautiful songs in Afrikaans and I might request a few more in the future. I'm glad you liked it! This are the lyrics translated into English: Then I Found You I'm laying down my weapons for the first time tonight. I (can) see myself in your eyes. I've already lost this war. I look at the blood upon my hands. I think I've changed, and you think I'm just saying it. (But) I love you -- I swear it. No arrogance, no hesitation. Laughing voices outside (and your) friends are saying, "See you later!" Everybody finds his own path, and I know I need to find mine, too, darling. Hey, my sweetie. Hey, my baby. You're my refuge. I never want to let you cry. You're my ballad. You're my little tune. We have a dog. We have a little house. I've given enough. I've screamed enough. I learned it long ago, but I've still continued to try. I fled like a traitor from that which was by my side. There were monsters in the dark, and then I found you. I swear. No arrogance, no hesitation. lyricstranslate.com

Hi here from South Africa. My husband and myself took a very long drive to our beach house yesterday and usually we play some of our favourite music. My husband requested this song and subsequently, I stumbled upon your channel. Karen Zoid & Francois Van Coke are 2 of the most seasoned artists in South Africa. I use to not like Afrikaans music ( lots of artists can sing the most rubbish and corny nonsense), but the good artists are fantastic. This is absolutely one of my favourite songs. Translation ( not direct) Ek lê my wapens neer (I'm laying down my weapons) Vanaand vir die eerste keer Sien ek myself in jou oë (Tonight for the first time I have seen myself in your eyes) Ek het hierdie oorlog verloor (I have lost this war) Ek staar na die bloed op my hande ( I'm staring at the blood on my hands) Ek weet ek het verander ( I know I have changed) Jy dink ek praat net weer ( You think I'm only talking again) Ek het jou lief Ek sweer (I love you, I swear) Geen pretensie Geen beheer ( No/Without pretense, No/without control) Buite die stemme wat skater ( Outside voices are bursting out in laughter) Vriende wat groet (Friends are saying goodbye) Sien jou later ( See you later) Elkeen vind sy pad (Each one has to find his own way) Ek weet ek moet ook my skat (I know I have to find mine as well, my Darling) Hey, my sweet Hey, my baby ( English part of the song) Jy’s my toevlug ( You are my refuge/ safe place / haven) Wil jou nooit laat huil nie ( I never want to make you cry) Jy’s my lied ( You're my Song ) Jy’s my wysie (You're my Melody) Ons het ’n hond We've got a dog) Ons het ’n huisie (We have our little house) Ek het genoeg gegee (I've given enough) Ek het genoeg geskree (I've cried out / shouted / screamed out enough) Ek het lankal terug geleer ( I've learned a long time ago) Maar nog steeds het ek probeer (But still I have tried) Vlug soos ’n verraaier ( Fled like a Traitor) Van dit wat my vashou (Of that which kept me tied me down / held me down) Daar was monsters in die donker ( There were {personal demons/ monsters} in the dark) Toe vind ek jou ( but then I found you) Ek sweer (I swear) Geen pretensie Geen beheer ( no / without any pretense or control)

This is a colab by the 2 greatest rockstars in South Africa. They're not a couple but great friends and amazing artists. The song is about finding your true love, saying there were monsters in the dark and they were about to give up on love "then I found you" ❤❤❤❤ It's the kind of song you dance to on your wedding day

I work for ATKV (Afrikaans language, culture, music and art org) and this song is absolutely amazing. Afrikaans is a really emotional language that can express so many things. I translated it the best way I can, but it doesn't have the same power if anyone wants to know what they are saying and wanna follow along: I'm laying my weapons down Tonight for the first time I see myself in your eyes I lost the war I'm staring at the blood on my hands I know I have changed You think I'm just talking again I do love you I swear No pretension No control No pretension No control No pretension No control No pretension No control Outside the voices that are skattering Friends that greet See you later Everyone finds their path I know I must my treasure (skat is a name for someone speacial) Hey, my sweet Hey, my baby You're my refuge Don't want you to cry You're my song You're my tune I gave enough I shouted enough I've learnt a long time ago But still I tried Flee like a traitor From that that holds me There was monsters in the darkness Then I found you I swear I swear No pretension No control No pretension No control No pretension No control No pretension No control I gave enough I shouted enough I've learnt a long time ago But still I tried Flee like a traitor From that that holds me There was monsters in the darkness Then I found you I swear I swear No pretension No control No pretension No control No pretension No control No pretension No control

These two are both legends in their genres Francois van Coke has a pretty successful solo career, but is also known for being the lead sing in a Hard Rock band - Fokoffpoelisiekar Karen Zoid has her own genre, she sing what she feels like. I have worked with both of them and they are both equally the nicest and coolest peeps. Maybe have a listen to them in their seperate careers. Karenzoid - Sonvanger Karenzoid - Afrikaners is plesierig Fokoffpoeliesiekar - Illusie van veiligheid Fokoffpoeliesiekar - Brand Suid Afrika But if you want some new Afrikaans bands Check these out Moses Metroman Spoegwolf Straatlig kinders But if you want a super commercial and catchy song try Synth Peter - Doef Doef Ps. The language is called Afrikaans, not south afrikaans.

The language is called Afrikaans (not South Afrikaans :) ) - it is a combination of mainly Dutch, but also German and some other languages, even Malay... was called Kitchen Dutch (a bit of a put down) by the English colonists, after the Cape was bought by the English from the Dutch and everyone else became kinda like outcasts... from what I can remember from primary school, years and years ago :D (fact check me)

Most of the translations out there are bad or fail to capture the essence of the song. Here's my translation. I'm bilingual and my home language is Afrikaans. The song title is "then I found you". Tonight I lay down arms For the first time I see myself through your eyes I have lost this war I stare at the blood on my hands I know, I have changed You think I'm just talking again But I love you, I swear No pretense No control (Repeats) Outside, the voices echo Friends saying, 'bye see you later' Each one finds their own way I know I must too, my dear Hey, my sweet Hey, my baby You are my refuge I don't ever want to make you cry You're my song You're my melody We have a dog We have a little home I've sacrificed enough I've screamed enough I learned long ago Yet still I tried to Flee like a traitor From that which is holding me in place There were monsters in the darkness Then I found you I swear I swear No pretense No control (repeat) Your interpretation is pretty close. It's about 2 people coming to terms with their relationship. The one is finally surrendering and making themselves vulnerable, saying the other has effectively saved them from their darkness and that they're no longer going to try to flee from the relationship. They are finding their way. The life they have together is enough and there's no need to try to flee anymore. They've lost the 'war' and examining the damage it caused in their relationship saying they're ready to accept it.

If you ever come back to Afrikaans music, please consider something by steve hofmeyr or bok van blerk. They both tend to sing more about the language and culture itself and can be seen as controversial figures. Elandre is great for the younger generation of South African singers
