I recently discovered a book, printed in 1832, 2" thick, of nothing but sermons, delivered between the late 1700's and early 1800's by a Scottish prelate, Hugh Blair, who was also a professor of rhetoric and belle lettres at the University of Edinburgh. The vocabulary alone is stunning in its contrast with the vacuous prattling we hear from just about all of those in the public square who now fancy themselves as intellectuals or of persons of significance. But the intellectual, the philosophical, and the theological content grips the reader in ways that nothing in today's culture seem capable of supplying. The majority of the sermons deal with the minutiae of the examined Christian life and the overcoming of the baser impulses ruling our daily lives, in the pursuit of the life well lived. But what fascinates me the most, apart from the sermons themselves, is the realization that he was most likely speaking to a packed house every Sunday and to people who were, not only capable of processing the intellectual weight and theological heft of the subject matter, but were applying the lessons learned in their daily lives and the effect of that influence then seeping out to the larger culture in which these people lived and moved. One can only imagine what a society influenced by such people must have been like on the personal and moral level.

Richard Tarnas, in his book “The Passion of the Western Mind” makes that exact point in his chapter on the maintaining of European intellectual integrity, that the Scholastics, because of their intense study of Scripture, and the manner of their study, preserved and promoted the intellectual tradition that gave rise to Universities and other examples of rational thinking. It’s in the abandonment of that robust tradition of “examining the Scriptures” and of learning how to “rightly divide” the Word of Truth, that the West has fallen farther and farther behind both, scholastically and intellectually.

Don't say 'failure of trust' as if all we have to do is learn to trust again - that is what we are being told all the time; that those in power must educate us to trust that they are right! We have to resist, and oppose. There can be no trust of teachers who are doing this (and unfortunately it is most of them because of how they have been taught); kids have to be removed from schools, rescued quickly, or teachers faced up to and removed. Very hard, but some are doing it and opposition groups are forming.. Another thing to do is teach the kids WHY this stuff is wrong. Show them this video, and others like it. Even young kids can understand more than many parents assume. Get them thinking, not rote learning.

@@lindosland agreed, but on the far side of all of this, we do need to rebuild some sort of communities involving trust.
@lindosland

@@sosaysthecaptain5580 I'm dubious. Trust means taking what others say as fact, and becomes all too often a tool for control through indoctrination. Instead, teach values, along with critical thinking that gets kids to look at why those values make sense, why they work in holding a society together. Teach that they might be the best so far, but that even a kid can question them and challenge a teacher. We need a new generation of kids that are expert at reasoning. Communities should be built on common values, along with the ability to have open discussion on those values. Stories are an excellent way of demonstrating why some values and behaviours have good outcomes and some bad - values only have meaning episodically; someone did this and then, this happened! Films are excellent for this, but only the ones based on novels. Modern films are based on action and manipulation. I'd love to see a movement away from Hollywood towards making more good life-based stories into movies.

I found the insights around judgement to be particularly thought-provoking. Especially the current pervasive idea that when someone judges my belief, they are judging me, that somehow I am deficient because my idea was questioned. I really feel this personally. How did we become so identified with our belief system that we are unable to separate our Self from the belief? How did we lose our ability to engage in healthy, thought-provoking debate without feeling personally attacked when someone has a contradictory belief? How have we forgotten that it is entirely possible that both sides are correct? And how do we change our current situation? As an aside, John, it seems to be the story of my life that I only recognise opportunity once it has been lost. I feel fortunate to have met you in a personal setting many years ago but I deeply regret not being more open to your conversation at the time 🙏. There is something called a Personal Safety or Risk Profile, and we all have one. It is your willingness to accept risk, and everyone operates at their particular level. As an example l ride motorcycles and in the US used to often ride with no helmet, gloves, boots, etc. However l would only do this if riding short trips at up to 70kmh. Over that speed l would feel unsafe. So l had reached my risk level. However if l ride with all the correct gear, Armour in my jacket, Kevlar jeans, etc. I will happily ride at over 200kmh because my personal perception is that it is the same risk level. (whether that is right or wrong is not the point). The point is that the more protections you put in place the more risks people will take to bring them to their own comfortable risk level.

This was excellent. Interesting that Furedi has noticed the apparent change in the Australian national character. I wonder if anyone has connected this to the advent of public liability laws? The cultural impact of these has been profound, even if it could not reasonably have been anticipated. These laws legitimise the impulse of some citizens to police the behaviour of others. If the consequences of your risk-taking is going to impact me, then I have a right to take measures to protect myself by attempting to constrain your behaviour. The result is that individual decisions are now subjected to community evaluation in a way they never were before. When "good" and "bad" is decided on the basis of health outcomes, risk-taking is discouraged. Public liability has also suppressed the former casual generosity that used to characterise our culture. I know farmers who used to let charities use their sheering sheds for barn dances but they won't do it now, in case someone slips and sues them. Australia is worse for these laws.

At the 29: 50 mark of the interview Furedi mentions the historical admonition to stop the time of the present and past and future to (once again) recreate the present as the beginning of the NEW. Politically and culturally (sic) this Ending/Beginning has been catastrophic across human societies in the last 100 years; specifically in Cambodia, where this insanity was instantiated to the devastating conclusion that resulted. No-where ( utopia) has there, it seems to be, an attempt to discern the epistemological and telos of the stopping, as it were/where FROM some time which doesn't at the same "time" dissociate, how this change in behaviour is worthwhile, advantageous (for, whom ?) and moral; Where is the evidence? How is the known from the past obliterated in the present by use of a new form of knowing, actualized from within a corpus that has yet to reconcile to that which ( on their account) is, say, better? No. This IS the best time, because "we" devise it so! Oh, really? I'll just wait and see.

@@fractalnomics The very definition of friends is problematic. I think that in a well-functioning society your friends should think like you. In today's society, with value systems fragmenting, this poses a huge problem. I am currently struggling and holding back from saying what I really want to to family members and friends, especially some with disturbed self-harming children. With your teacher friends you have an easier situation in that the 'capture' of schools is being written and talked about widely, and your teacher friends have a duty as teachers to look at what is going on. 'Expose them to who?' Good question. I guess you could expose them to the pupils (the young are hungry for truth) but you run the risk of being accused of corrupting the kids! The film 'Dead Poets Society' gives a good example of teacher Robin Williams going bravely out on a limb, to the point where the kids worship him, though for some kids it ends badly - he is perhaps not careful enough! Or expose them to the parents, but you've got your work cut out demonstrating what is happening in schools. Have you watched any Jordan Peterson videos? He left his University Professor job (and friends) because he objected to what he was required to do, and now has a huge following and different life. I recommend his video on YT 'Telling the Truth'. I was brought up to understand that a safe space meant a place where each person can speak their mind without being attacked for their views. Today safe spaces mean the exact opposite.

We lack this sort of conversation environment in Marxist NZ. Here, the experiment is almost complete and the sheep are mostly sleeping. Many Maori continue to offer complex issues for these fallen ones, because our culture runs contrary to European cultural ideas. When it comes to meaning and value, Maori think in absolute terms, and this is deeply ingrained in the culture and difficult to contend with. However, when darkness has come, light is around the corner. Cheers from NZ.

Way too many sheep in Oz as well, they bleat to get their hooves stab, expect sympathy on social media when they virtue signal about all the horrendous side effects they suffer and how mandatory this suffering should be inflicted on every lamb, even the smallest baby ones. Meanwhile state governments are openly building concentration camps whilst the media complains that the purebloods yellow stars aren't big enough. Meanwhile Morrison, the biggest sheep let's Prince Charles tell him how we need to eat cockroaches. At least you have a communist horse for a PM. Tell me the current woes across the Tasman.

Granny Annie The thought of cockroaches reminds me of how the Rwanda leaders called some of their citizens cockroaches in the months before the calls to exterminate the cockroaches. Seek the Truth. There’s One who claims He is the Truth and the Light. He gives perfect peace.

Granny Annie There is a great discipline and peace that comes from memorizing Scripture about peace. E.g. God has not given me a spirit of fear but of love, power and a sound mind. Part of it is what we feed ourselves, reading the Psalms is very calming and learning or singing Psalm 23, 121 are beautiful, powerful and calming. I will pray that God meets you and fills you to overflowing with His peace. There are so many who have no idea there is One who gives perfect peace. If you look in the back of a Bible there is often a long list of suggestions. Much 💕

The neoliberalisation of education has instigated a necessary backlash, but one that has morphed into as big a monster as its progenitor. As for longevity and material well-being, in the UK these are in decline as a result of consecutive right-wing governments.

So true ! Our biggest challenge is how are we to alter our current education system, its one, of the places where so much damage is being done to our youth n their hope for a future. = mental health is not possible without hope. Interestingly its our hope our very core which is currently being attacked n eroded politically.

Frank is brilliant He is right about the medicalisation of mental states I have a few left/lib friends who live very scatty lives and are always anxious/depressed, when asked or challenged about it they simply say “I’ve got a chemical in balance” or another recent diagnosis but rarely change their lifestyle or outlook on life...give it a few years and we will all be on SOMA

So many people have been abused in traditional families. Psychology has helped a lot of them. Frank Furedi neglects to mention that 60 percent of the world's population will experience a mental disorder at some point in their lives.

@John; Your comment on the French revolution really rang true for me. In my scholarly readings of the turmoil in france and the sociopolitical landscape of France in 1789 (and before) its very easy to dismis it as a populist working class revolution. While it had these elements, the wealthy non-aristocratic inteligencia contributed greatly to the "organisation" and "nationalisation" of the revolt transforming it from Parisian anarchy into a powerful political force which threatened European peace and stability. Its easy to see how political forces of educated middle to upper middle class to the neo-elites, (intelligentsia) in our own time; are using popularist social uprisings to serve their own subversive agenda - Such as the BLM organisation and social organisation of "protests" (read riots) across the face of America. There are definite sociopolitical forces led by an intelligentsia in both eras and there are powerful individuals willing to profit from the bushfires and anarchy of the times.

I don’t think females need more affirmation than boys. I fact I’d say it’s the opposite. Boys require much more guidance and affirmation than females. The affirmation you are talking about for females is based on the pressure on them to look a certain way. Females are more instinctive and are better at finding their own way. This enables them to be mothers.

Does the concept of illegitimacy of any past time or civilization not delegitimize history itself? What happened, how it happened can be legitimized with proof. To place a measure of values upon those facts depends on many factors that have developed beyond, and apply judgement in retrospect, based on molded relections, influences and experiences beyond that history. It cannot affect that historical factual record as a means of denial that it happened. The further we move beyond that history , the more we develop greater appreciation of that record because our viewpoint enriches by the additional experiences we accumulate. It broadens the horizon so to speak of the individual's perspective and perception.

Australians have always been very happy with our government making us do stuff for our own good. We are made to vote - by law, at risk of being fined - as a "civic duty". But how do my fellow Australians benefit from me spoiling my vote or (worse still) placing a donkey vote? What is freedom when it's forced upon you by law? No freedom at all. We have ceded our duty to think for ourselves. Allowing the powers-that-be to decide what is good for the population brought us the tragedy of the stolen generation, among many other travesties. But, having said that, we are compliant and obedient - and we live in a mostly very comfortable society, without most of the issues facing most other first-world countries... until the powers-that-be decide otherwise, I guess.
