I just heard this song for the first time today! How is that possible?! This is the most patriot song acknowledging how great America was and is. I agree with others when they say how sorry they are that they didn't see Frank Sinatra live. Grateful for you posting this video. May be too patriotic to stay on KZitem. I encourage everyone to share this video on all social media before it's too late. God bless America in the coming months and years.

I agree. Earl Robinson (who wrote the music) and Abel Meeropol (who wrote the words under the pseudonym Lewis Alan) would have strongly supported the Black Lives Matter uprisings.

This is just superlative--Frank at the peak of his powers. I heard this from *Sounds Of Sinatra* this AM and had to see if it existed here. You can tell how deeply patriotic he is when he performs this. The introduction about his father is touching. He had the ability to communicate basic values to people that was quite extraordinary--not in a condescending or critical tone but inclusively and dutifully. He also seemed so genuinely appreciative of his opportunity to achieve what he did here.

The "house" is a metaphor for the country. The song was written in 1943 with lyrics by Abel Meeropol and music by Earl Robinson. Meeropol, who wrote it under the pen name Lewis Allan, had very liberal views and mixed feelings about America. He loved the constitutional rights and freedoms that America was based on, but he hated the way people of other races, religions, and political views were often treated. His lyrics do not reflect the way he thought America was but what it had the potential to be. With the country under attack, he wanted to express why it was worth fighting for. LYricS "The House I Live In" [Intro:] What is America to me? A name, a map, or a flag I see? A certain word, "democracy"? What is America to me? The house I live in, a plot of earth, a street The grocer and the butcher, and the people that I meet The children in the playground, the faces that I see All races and religions, that's America to me The place I work in, the worker by my side The little town or city where my people lived and died The "howdy" and the handshake, the air of feeling free And the right to speak my mind out, that's America to me The things I see about me, the big things and the small The little corner newsstand and the house a mile tall The wedding in the churchyard, the laughter and the tears The dream that's been a-growin' for a hundred and fifty years The town I live in, the street, the house, the room The pavement of the city, or a garden all in bloom The church, the school, the clubhouse, the millions lights I see But especially the people That's America to me Writer(s): Earl Robinson, Lewis Allan

THIS classic song NEEDS to be heard even more in 2019 !! Frank Sinatra passed on this day, May 16th, 1998.....I saw him LIVE in 1988 at Bally's Reno when I was a young man of 25, RIGHT UP FRONT, my elbow on the stage !! When the 90 min. AWESOME SHOW was over I was the 1st person he came to and gave me a good 7 sec. firm , genuine hand shake as he looked at me with those steel blue eyes !! I am getting emotional as I write this ! TRULY a once in a lifetime performer !! RIP " Ol' blue eyes " ...love , Nicky D. ( bay area, Ca.)

LOLOLOL, this song was written by two Communists, you stupid fuck. One of them even raised the Rosenbergs' orphaned children after they were judicially murdered by the US government. It's not surprising to me that you're to stupid to know this, though. Communists have always loved this country more than the likes of you.

Maybe it's because he thinks it's ironic that the song was written by Earl Robinson, an American who spent his years advocating left-wing causes. Earl also wrote "Joe Hill" one of the great if not the greatest Union Ballad of all time. The song was a favorite of Walter Reuther, the great union leader who founded the UAW. I'm sure Earl Robinson was able to live comfortably off the royalties of Sinatra's cover of his song. Only in America, right! Sadly, Robinson was killed by a drunk driver in his hometown of Seattle, Wash. in the early 1990s. Many other singers have covered "The House I Live In" most notably Paul Robeson, the great and controversial Civil Rights Activist who was also a supporter of the Soviet Union.

Two other verses about racism that Frank consciously left out of the song: The house I live in, My neighbors white and black, The people who just came here, Or from generations back; The town hall and the soapbox, The torch of liberty, A home for all God's children; That's America to me. The house I live in, The goodness everywhere, A land of wealth and beauty, With enough for all to share; A house that we call Freedom, A home of Liberty, And it belongs to fighting people That's America to me.
