As a current glassblower who uses molds for artisan purposes i sure wish i could have jad a job like those old timers did. I would have been happy. Now i rarely get to make anything at all as fuel is very expensive sadly.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. Yes, so true. It's increasingly difficult for our glass art friends to make their artworks. There are a few videos on KZitem about making your own wood fired glassmaking furnace like they did in the late 1700s and 1800s. In case you might be interested, in addition to the Heritage Glass Museum, South Jersey has the Museum of American Glass. I'll share a couple links. www.heritageglassmuseum.org www.wheatonarts.org/programs/12025-2/

What is the position of mold boy called today? Something like mold operator, to be gender neutral?

Hi, This is a reply by one of the Heritage Glass Museum Trustees: Most glass production is automated so it’s a machine that is opening and closing the molds. According to the job description for the Production Laborer position at Arc International (Durand) in Millville, they are the person who swaps the molds in the machines between production lines. At Simon Pearce, the handmade glass factory in VT (yes, the factory flooded and is now closed - here’s hoping they can reopen again!), the molds are opened by a foot pedal. The workers are titled “Glassblower” and “Glass Apprentice” and as part of their jobs they swap out and maintain the molds. At an art studio like WheatonArts, the individual artists maintain and use the molds. The studio staff there are officially called “Glass Studio Coordinator” or “Assistants” but most people call them artists or glassblowers. Here is a link to the Durand job: www.salary.com/job/durand-glass-manufacturing-company/production-laborer/j202304171818339799340? Here is the Simon Pearce website: www.simonpearce.com/the-story-of-simon-pearce. And here’s a WheatonArts link: www.wheatonarts.org/artists/studios/glass/

When it comes to bottles the mold boy is called automated al hehe. I tend to call the people opening and closing the molds that I use for more artisan objects by their first names 😂
