Zappa solos were always unique. He considered solos to be instant compositions.

The other guitar player is Adrien Belew. He played with David Bowie, Talking Heads, King Crimson and many more.

I saw Adrian Playing here in Nashville in 1977 with his band Sweetheart about a month before Zappa discovered him there. They were wearing Zoot Suits!

What a great guitar eye you have! Yes, the additional switches you spotted were installed by Frank (or one of his techs but most likely Frank himself). Don’t recall what they do but there is a video about it on KZitem as mentioned in previous comment. I’m pretty sure Frank modded everything including every guitar he played. Please do proceed down this rabbit hole. I dare you! Hitting the subscribe button now…

Warning: Do NOT listen to the album Overnite Sensation. It will change the way you listen to and ruin all other music. Your favorite bands will seem quaint and simple. It will start an obsessive compulsion that will last the rest of your life. 😉

Zappa is on that Prince/genius level.... Probably too damn good. There's nothing he couldn't do.

You might want to listen to the version on Bongo Fury. Still live, but with all the lyrics audible. Great reaction!

Ron thanks for the video & Im glad you have discovered the music & genius of Frank Zappa. Be warned, if you decide to go down the FZ rabbit hole you are in for a long, but very rewarding, ride. Your comments on there being a different feel & vibe to each nights performance are taken to an extreme with FZ. His solos for most songs followed a basic theme but were completely improvised every night - he never played the same thing twice. . He is the most prolific song & writer of music of all time, he died young but managed to release 100's of albums. There are more videos, interviews & songs on youtube of FZ than any other musician or band. The other guitarist on this video is Adrian Belew, King Crimson, David Bowie, Talking Heads etc. But discoverd by Frank. Franks band was a breeding ground for musicians of all instruments , to grow gain experience & then move on to their own careers. The list of Zappa alumni is too long to mention. . . Also Frank is know for modding his guitars with all sorts of devices that would yeild him various sounds & tones. He never kept the same guitar sound for long so he has litterally 100's of different sounds but they were all great. Good luck & I hope you continue you journey into the music of Frank Zappa. .

Dweezil talked about that "Roxy" Sg in a recent interview. It was so modded that it was ions away from the original SG sound. Zappa's SG had basically a small studio on board the guitar. The SG cuts through a mix all right but never at the level Zappa's SG used to do.

The sg was a copy built for him by a fan that he then modified but not a Gibson

A few guitarist suggestions: Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood (Live at El Mocambo) or Couldn't Stand the Weather Live, Snarky Puppy - We Like it Here. Two completely different vibes, but both are worth a reaction. Oh, and The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again (Shepperton Studios - 1978).
