There are a few problems with your story. 1. You say you started "listing" to him (presumably, you mean "listening") because your teacher skipped him. You clearly skipped English appreciation, and that doesn't seem to bother you.

I admire her life as a whole. And for me she is a winner. So, I want you all to reconsider. Isn't it a bit selfish to choose how you want to see a person? Why is that? Because you CAN'T relate. I'm a guitarist, musician, father and husband at 50 years old. I am just now getting into Frank Zappa. Yes, this is sad to watch but to be honest, it's a natural part of life and cancer has impacted so many of us. If you’ve ever lost someone to cancer you know what I mean. However, unlike many who have passed in silence, Frank has left us a large amount of music, videos, writings, thoughts and of course, his children, as representative of what a person can leave behind. For me at 50, I continue to be inspired by others and now, I have so much of Frank to absorb. Those bits of him that inspire me, as I create music with my kids, will be passed along to my 5 children and that’s very cool and unique. Thank you Frank!!!!

Despite his illness, Frank's eyes light up when he talks about his friend and mentor Slonimsky. In the end, our relationships are the most important things in life, either treasured or regretted. The struggles to overcome life's obstacles are more precious than the material wealth that success brings. Communion with nature and the spiritual world are also treasures. The most worrying, and depressing, thing about living in the 21st century, is that 99% of "life's obstacles," we must overcome, are man made, either by the corrupt society laws and rules we live under, or from our own troubled minds. Its a very sad fact that we live under a regime that promotes the illusion that "material things" are important, and so to be reached for at all cost. Whatever man's original role on this earth was/is, it definitely was not the forced slavery to the corporate elite role we play today. Communion with nature and the higher development of one's spiritual self, above all else I believe, must of been close to our original role here, but today we find ourselves so out of touch with the most basic awareness of the natural earth, that such ideas are in themselves alien to most people. The destruction and rape of our planet and its resources, the extinction of species on an international scale goes on unobstructed in the name of progress and industry, but in all honesty is just the greed of the corrupt few, right at the top. Frank Zappa was a genuine person in a 100% corrupt and greed driven business. Genuine people, without agenda of any kind, are a very very rare species in the 21st century, along with common sense. You enter this life with nothing, and its a certain fact that you will leave the exact same way, with nothing, so enlightenment and spiritual growth must be key. We understand so very little of this mystery, and are misled and told untruths and lies at every turn, starting as children in preschool, and continued throughout our entire existence to keep us off course. I try to steer my ship by the old adage of, "Treat others as you yourself would want to be treated," and, "If it feels wrong, it probably is wrong."

I remember when I scored the "Shut up and Play yer Guitar" box set in 1985. I always knew Frank could play, but the bloke was much better than people give him credit for. He even played the guitar satirically, ripping off Hendrix and Santana, among others. He was to music as, say, Robin Williams was to comedy - endlessly inventive, spontaneous, totally inimitable. Occupied a sphere of his own.

Frank Zappa! What an amazing musician! What an amazing, interesting man! I went to a book signing he gave once at B&N many years ago. He signed my book and I shook his hand. An awesome moment! I cherish that book and all my LP's and CD's of his music. "Genius" is a word that has been cheapened over the years, but where Mr. Zappa is concerned, it is the ONLY word to describe him. Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar is still my most favorite music from Frank Zappa. R.I.P.

My introduction to Frank was when there were a thing called free FM radio in Los Angeles (kmet), and might have picked him up along with the mothers during the crossover from am to FM radio wavelengths. The cool thing is no one told me to like him or listen to him, I immediately fell in love with his music and his philosophy on things. His love of rhythm and blues and his depth of classical music made him very unique. Frank never came as a (12 for a dozen musician) he came as a special delivery to all of us and the world.

Miles Davis you’re missing the point entirely of what these people are saying. Haven’t you ever watched someone die slowly? Watch someone slip away right in front of you? It is difficult to watch. It is hard to see because it is sad. Nobody is complaining. Nobody is implying that he should have been doing something different. It is just sad to see him in that state and know what is coming. That is why it is “difficult” to watch.

I don’t think we will see another musician like him in our lifetime….He was one of a kind. I was fortunate enough to see him in concert twice. One time was a small venue and my friends and I showed up hours early and were able to stand leaning on the stage. At that time I didn’t realize how lucky I was and I would give anything to be able to relive that show. After the concert we noticed that he had dropped a guitar pick and a lighter on the stage and we ask one of the stagehands if we could have it and he gave them to us. My friend was a guitarist so of course he got the pick. I ended up with a lighter but of course it was like many other lighters and disappeared over the years

So sad to see Frank in that condition, ditto for Freddy Mercury - my 2 greatest musical heroes if you will. Franks cynical side was the source of his humor but I got the impression there wasn't much joy in his life, so little satisfied him. +David Collins It might be true, that there wasn't too much joy in his life. But that's what life is like for smart people. Have you ever heard of a moron being depressed and comitting suicide? I haven't.... To me FZ was a true genius, a philosopher, a comedian, an unbelievably skilled composer and a hell of a guitar player. I've read his "Real Frank Zappa Book" when it first was published an there is still so much wisdom in it. When I learned the sad news of him passing away in December 1993, I sat down and cried. I still miss him every day. What would he tell the polticians and big business men today? Today's insanity would have been a huge source of inspiration to him. So I guess we've missed abig amount of great cynical songs and interviews....

+yyz Yea, Frank was a WAY better guitarist than most ppl even Realize!. Steve Vai even talks of how nervous he was when he auditioned for him. Said he asked him to play so many different strange versions of impossible scales that he thought he was out. Then he asked him to play something that after thinking for a minute, Vai said he realized that what frank was asking him to do was Literally impossible. He told him, "It's Impossible". He thought he was out for sure & said "Thanks for letting me come down & try anyway". Frank said ,"But you have the job!" The impossible thing is what did it. But he had such a different sound on guitar than most guitar players. He could play a lick with a simple pentatonic scale, & it would sound like he was doing some strange scale you'd never heard of because of the strange note arrangements he used.

Sorry but as someone who saw Frank at 14 in 74 to his last tour in 88,only the first tour was a true representation of Frank. I had to walk out of the second tour after 30 minutes with a friend who totally agreed with me.I sat uncomfortably through ZPZ when they opened for Return to Forever.Dweezil should play Dweezil and throw a couple of his fathers songs in. I would enjoy that much more.
