Besides the version on Broadway the Hard Way CD, this is my favorite version of Outside Now. I'm glad to have seen more of this performance.

Too bad the sound is so buried in the mix. Is there more out there from The Band from Utopia? Love seeing all the guys together. Just like old times.

Great band, I would rather have seen them than Zappa plays Zappa. Most of the members that I saw with Zappa many years ago. Go Tommy, Ike, Fowlers, Bobby & all the great Zappa xmembers!!

The sound here is very cloudy. The dude on the desk must have been somewhere twerlin an pukin. Ike had to signal for him to turn his mike up at the start. I bet Gail is real pissed.

great playing by everyone...I also like th ZPZ band...they are both valid....one curiosity.....without Frank...even though they are great and are playing most things note for note,,,AND improvising JUST how Frank liked....kudos to IKE....but...even though all of that...without Frank....it misses that extra something.....doesn't it?...beautiful solo by Fowler in Outside Now

Great concert. Outside Now not only longer but far more powerful version than say that on Broadway The Hardway. Its an unusually stark and bluesy composition for Zappa so his mischievous presence missed less particularly with Willis doing such a great guitar solo (his vocal also more committed than on recorded versions).

But oh well, what the hell.Oh and how bad is that sound off at the end, that was awful.

Thanks a ton for posting this...hearing a live version of "Outside Now"...wow...interesting that they credited Chad on drums at the beginning...but there's as much Vinnie Colaiuta as Chad.

Saw this in Boulder Co. at the Fox theater in 1994!!! So stoked i got so lucky. Also met Ike Willis before the show. Bought him an orange juice, he talked with me and friends for 20 mins or so. Called us Zappa encyclopedias!! Hahaha!! 👍👍

anybody got a quick study of what scale/modes lik/ frank uses for the outside now solo....?
@GusFogle
8 жыл бұрын
+geddunn Outside Now is in Bb Lydian, the chords being Bbmaj7 and C major (the C major containing the raised 4th in Bb). So a simplified way to look at it would be for the bluesier sounding parts Frank used Bb major pentatonic and blues and for the more modal jazzy parts he used Bb lydian. Anything other than that is just Frank doing alterations on the scales like a jazz guitarist would, sometimes tipping into Lydian-Dominant (raised 4th, lowered 7th) on the C major chord for color. Just use your ears and listen a lot is my best advice, but knowing those scales won't hurt :-)

ive been a big zappa fan for years. but its the first time i see this concert. man.. what a great frontman Ike Willis is!! Fantastic guy and musician. but if there is one thing i seriously hate in the whole history of Zappa.. then it is the vocals of Robert Martin. Such an awful voice. :/ "The Illinois Enema Bandit" would have been much better with Ike on vocals
