Been listening to this as long as I've been alive, lol. Very cool. Wasn't expecting to see a reaction to this one! Frank is a guy we sure could use right now. In fact, we could have used him every year since he died in the 90s. Gone WAY too soon.

PS: I forgot to say: GREAT reaction video. Every time the chorus came around, I loved how you relished singing those lyrics. I'd say I'm shocked no one has sampled this track over the years but it probably has to do with copyright. Zappa (and the Zappa estate) is like the Hendrix estate: they insist on getting paid! 😄

Dread. I grew up with this. My skin is white, but as the gentleman said, there are many times I wish I weren't. I am old. But once upon a time I tried very hard to stand up to the powers that be. I played in a mostly white reggae rock band. We were well regarded. Had the privilege of opening for the likes of Mutabaruka,. Aswad, Steel Pulse, and toured for 10 dates with the Burning Spear on his first US tour. I love electric electric guitar. FZ riffs are like Picasso. Analyze them all day. Useless. If you're an artist, BE YOURSELF. Peace.g

Frank raps man. He said one time he used to see the bro's around a firebarrel, on the sidewalks, in the backside of towns and take turns , whoever was the next one to throw their disses on the fire got to get their hands closer to the flames as they spurt out what was on their mind about why theyre feelin bad.

Frank had different ethnicitys in his band and in his early years it was tough getting a gig. Hes been through it all. Himself looking like a creepy weirdo oir momas warned us about. But je, like many of us, were left one time heartbroken, in trouble with the law for some stupid reason, and just keeps persisting in being himself. A very good role model . He made his own record label and all, securing intelectual rights decades before anyone else thought if it. He owns his empire. Period. And hes a genius. Hes still alive. In the sense. Legendary. Once you start listening to zappa music, theres no way out. You will spend tje rest of your life hearing awesome music youve never imagined hearing. And thats just the beginning.

One thing to keep in mind is that Zappa often used the “unreliable narrator” trope. He would sing lyrics that might have appeared to have been penned by a slightly dim witted but nevertheless socially concerned hippy. They were not always meant to be taken seriously. Often a tongue in cheek spoof or joke.

@twwtjohns
Жыл бұрын
This song is about the Watts Riots that began with a 21 year old black man was stopped for drunk driving. At some point a policeman hit him in the face with a police baton and rumors spread that police had kicked a pregnant woman who was at the scene. That was the spark that exposed police mistreatment of the black residents of the area. The fires burned for nearly a week and that's what Frank is describing.

Not much difference between this and early Rap music. His vocal delivery is flat and monotone, more like talking than singing. And the subject matter was what was going on in the streets at that time. No doubt about it, Zappa was a Rap pioneer, among other things. 😲
