In my own opinion of this alternate ending, I can only theorize that the Giant Octopus had showed up looking for food. Since Baragon’s corpse was thrown off the cliff, the nearest food source it could reach was Frankenstein, whom immediately attacked it, and the Octopus instinctively took him as it’s prey.

Thanks for posting. The octopus effects look better than I expected. For those still trying to clear up the history: the octopus was never part of the script or shooting schedule. They had wrapped when the American co-producer, Saperstein, said he wanted a giant octopus battle at the end. It cost Toho money to re-assemble and shoot this, but director Honda agreed with no intention of including it in the Japanese release. When Saperstein saw the effects, he didn't like them and didn't include it in the American cut either. But the scene was accidentally aired on Japanese TV and has since popped up here and there. The new Honda bio covers the story. Yeah, it makes for a nice link to "WotG," but they wouldn't have known that in '65!

It's just so random for an octopus to appear out of nowhere for this alternate ending. I like the original better when Frankenstein sinks into the ground with the dead Baragon during the earthquake. It gave a feel that this Frankenstein could've conquered the world after defeating and proving it's strength against Baragon. But hey it's not bad really since it can tie in with the war of the Gargantuans.

DEAR HEAVENS.. I would love love LOVE to find this incredible classic available again.. be it here or ( ESPECIALLY!! ) on DVD! AGG!! SUCH a Fun FUN Kaiju Flick!! AND from what I read online.. this is actually the back door to how they push into the next movie of " War of the Gargantuas"... it was some of the cellular matter from frankenstein that was IN the water that started to grow and feed on aquatic life that lead to the ( heavily aggressive and dangerous ) Green Gargantua. The BROWN one, was from pieces of Frankenstein that were left on the ground from various times he got injured that grew BUT which stayed on land.. and as per the original concept.. it ( the creature) was mostly non aggressive toward humans.
@thinnerdounut

I think the reason why Oodako came on land because it tasted a piece of flesh of Frankenstein when he was in the water. Despite it eating humans on fishing boats Frankenstein's flesh must have tasted special to him and made it craved more. Since Frankenstein is a mutated human it may have made Oodako stronger. That's my theory anyway. I know having a giant octopus appear out of nowhere in the woods is...ridiculous but I like this better then the original ending. Sure the original ending gave Frankenstein a chance to came back but to me I thought him not jumping off because he was to busy victory roaring was stupid. At least in this ending he went out fighting.
