Liszt had really big hands, i can really barely reach 10th, sometimes 9th in faster tempos can tire me.. Reaching high intervals, big jumps,massive accords, it's all what Liszt wanted to make the "3-hand effect" .. But for those, who have smaller hands, to play this piece as right as was written is impossible and in this piece sadly even with broken accords.
@AoSCow

I don't think he even had large hands, around 10th, maybe 11th on a good day. Rachmaninoff, on the other hand reaches 13th.

***** Pick up a Liszt biography. Liszt was able to play the hammerklavier, and he was well known for being the first to perform it in public since Beethoven wrote it. However, it took him a considerable amount of time to learn and practice the piece. Liszt could sightread almost every other piece that was played in concerts at the time, even Islamey.

I always think that the way that Franz Liszt compose is impressive, and his style of difficulty is so unique and different. After these original pieces I still think maybe he was trying to write an incredible piece as hard as possible but keep each note unique and stylish. After that, perhaps he cannot even play it, then he was trying to rearrange it to make it possible to play but still hard to accomplish. I think that's how Franz Liszt composes his music.

@@babygirl4169 He never played his variation of Paganini No.4 piece in public and when he played some clip he never raises as the tempo he wrote that's what I meant. I've been practicing this for a year and its fast and furious, most would say that it sounds like a professional recording (except some speed fluctuations and changes in dynamics to give the song a dramatic effect and my own personal touch) but it is almost impossible to perfect. The polyrhythms at the end are good, entire variation eleven is really good (fast, no staccato at beginning) variation 8 I speed up a bit (as everyone does) but variation 6? Never can be as fast as the rest of the piece IF I play it without mistakes. This dream of playing it perfect will never happen for anyone just cause of damn variation 6 and 11. It takes two very different skillsets to one of them somewhat correct let alone perfect. I've always been quick with right and left hand movement and even arpeggios, but the jitter you have to do to play variation 6 at the same speed as the rest is possible, but very unlikely when playing the correct notes and rhythms. Some people would say I have perfected this and I would say I'm as close as anyone could get to it, but I know that I will never play it perfect. That is why the Liszt/Paganini grandes etudes are so difficult and intriguing, it's a complex piece that you can practice forever and always improve on. If someone was to perfect the etudes they would lose the wonder, awe and fascination surrounding them. Only a few people can play it right, (don't listen to this version if you want to actually listen to the song, its there for visual appeal) and I am proud to say I am one of them.
