People seem to be looking back on the original Frasier with rose tinted glasses. Don't get me wrong, I came to love Frasier, but it wasn't an instant success for me and took until about half way through the first season before it started to draw me in. A lot of that was simply down to the characters settling into their groove. For example, Daphne dialing down the kookiness routine and Marty rowing back on the bitterness eventually transformed those characters into 3 dimensions. So no, I don't see the basket case being portrayed here, I'll reserve my judgement until the end of the season.

I actually agree with you, and I can't understand some of the comments that would be so harsh on the original Frasier, which was absolutely brilliant and hysterical. I do find that the two young men in the series are boring as hell and David is irritating, so this show will not be the success that its predecessor was because the original Fraser was brilliant and well acted. I do think that an appearance more frequent than not of both Ross and Lilith would be outstanding , which certainly could boost the ratings, and I know that Lilith would be well received.

I'm just not a fan of the 3 younger actors in these roles (Freddy, David & Eve); I've only seen the first couple of episodes but it's just not working for me. Maybe it isn't just the actors, maybe it also has something to do with the writing or the chemistry or maybe their characters aren't well developed enough yet, but I just do not feel like they match the kind of naturalness and believability of the characters from Cheers and Frasier o.g. Granted they've got a high bar to reach as the cast of Cheers and Frasier o.g. were amazing and among the best-assembled casts in TV history, but I don't feel like they reach that bar. They just feel too sit-comy to me, the magic isn't there.

What I can say about this new show is that it's reminding me of the *early* original _Frasier_ episodes. I remember watching that around 8-10 years ago and thinking "This is not really as funny as it could be": most characters were a bit one note (except for Frasier himself, who had already evolved in _Cheers_ for 8 years), and Marty was way too bitter to feel right for me. It was halfway around the first season when Marty and Frasier could put some of that bitterness behind, and the conflict became much more about their personalities clashing, while still loving each other. And it took a bit longer for other characters to evolve beyond their initial pitches. What I'm saying is that I think it's too early to declare this series a complete failure, even if I think it's starting a bit weaker than the previous show when it began (for some of the same reasons you cover, actually).

I agree with your sentiments and analysis entirely. I do think it's unfair to compare the show and its characters to the original show and its characters as they were later in the series. As you say, they were far more fleshed out... but they had YEARS to become so. So, when I compare the shows, I try to compare apples to apples. Compare the first episode of one to the first episode of the other... and it's STILL night and day. The original was just FAR better written. Comedy in the first series was situational, not actually played as jokes. The result is this new series seems to be trying too hard for the laugh, rather than setting up the situation, then letting the laugh come naturally.

The original Frasier was so good from the first minute of the pilot. I’m thinking of that line he gives “My wife left me which was painful, then she came back which was excruciating.” It was hilarious and a perfect joke but it was also a perfect summation of Frasier’s previous life and his basic pathos. Frasier longs for perfection and he usually gets what he wants, but it always turns out to make things worse - usually by his own neuroses. He is such a strongly delineated character and they surrounded him with equally well written personalities and then cast them perfectly. They felt like real people with lives outside of Frasier’s. I can’t say that for new batch. Maybe it would’ve been better if they picked up with Frasier already having moved to Boston and he’s already established his new life. Maybe it would feel better if everything felt more lived in rather than Frasier forcing himself into this new life with Freddie and taking a job that he doesn’t really want. It all seems a little depressing where as Frasier in Seattle was exciting and hopeful.

So far, I really like the reboot. I m engaged enough that I want to know what's going to happen to these people. Give it some time - the new actors and writers are just getting their sea legs and things will smooth out soon. As to the plots, this is the awkward but critical getting-to-know-you phase where all the strangers (new actors) are being introduced. I'm sure with some time and evolving character development, we will all become friends. But you are not entirely wrong. I would really like to see major development in one area to ensure the long-term success of the show. You are right that Frasier is by far the most interesting character and Kelsey Grammer is the best actor so everyone else needs to up their game to be interesting and likable also. I especially think the son and nephew need a lot of work. Right now all I'm getting is whiner and dork. They look alike which I can understand since they are supposed to be related, but I mean they REALLY look alike and they both give off a serious white bread vibe. I cannot blame my trouble distinguishing between the two on "all white people look alike" because I AM white. These two are really important because they need to become the next Frasier and Niles, with some familiar quirks and some new and interesting quirks that are all their own. You mentioned Big Bang Theory's Sheldon who was phenomenal and I have heard a lot of his success can be attributed to the genius of Jim Parsons. That's a lot for "Freddy and David" to live up to but just trying to reach that level could make all the difference! But I am not forgetting how important the writers are so my final appeal is to you. PLEASE make these two young men as interesting, unique, likable, well-rounded, and memorable as you can. This is a team effort and I wish you all the best for a lengthy show run! Maybe the reboot will outlive me - yes, I was there for all of Cheers and Frasier. Maybe that explains why I care so much. Tootles! 🙂

I had wished that Frasier was a widower who was effected by the death of his wife. He finds himself, again. Because the death of Charlotte and his father, Frasier decides to start a new life. Frasier is still a little ignorant of starting new relationships with women. To add to the fun. Frasier has a teenage daughter who is a lot like her parents. Frasier notices that his daughter remind him of someone. Now in Boston, Frasier has an opportunity to start a new relationship with his son Freddy. Coming with Frasier is his nephew. After being in Boston for a few weeks, Frasier's daughter had a new friend who happens to be the son of one of Boston's best politicians. Frasier notices how his relationship with Freddy reminds him of his father. While he keeps a distance from Cheers, Frasier remembers Cheers. He makes a visit to Cheers with Freedy and his nephew. Fraiser learns that Cheers has new owners. The new owners had only change the bar a little. One of the new owners is related to another old friend from Cheers.
