Niles was a lot funnier before the writers gave him love interests. After that, the writers weren't writing for David Hyde Pierce's natural exquisite comedic abilities. They were writing for the producers. The character of Niles got loused up because none of the many writers they brought in over the years had sense enough to know Hyde-Pierce was awkward when put in romantic heterosexual situations. David never had believable on-screen chemistry with any of the girlfriends they gave Niles. If they'd have left all of his girlfriends invisible like they did with Maris, the continuity of character would have spanned the entire series. Niles was so much more lovable as an OCD married bachelor.

That's actually why DHP got the role. Originally Frasier was supposed to be an only child but DHP looked so much like a younger Kelsey Grammer that they wrote the part of Niles specifically for him. They even make a note of this in the episode where Sam, from Cheers, shows up. He looks at Niles and says, "he looks just like you before you started spending so much time at the bar. My favourite line is, “you mean Papa?” I’m gay, a situation my mother (of blessed memory) was never comfortable with. However, whenever I told her I was dating a new guy, her first question was always…. “Is it too much to ask wether or not he’s a good Jewish boy?” The time I told her I was dating a black Jewish lawyer she said, “Oy-vey! I suppose I should be happy. At least he’s Jewish. I don’t want to sound prejudiced, but do you really HAVE to date…. a lawyer(!)”

Meanwhile, David Hyde Pierce went on to star in Spamalot and performed an entire musical number about needing Jewish people to succeed on Broadway (complete with a crap-ton of Jewish references). Every time he shouts "Papa can you hear me?" I think of this episode. XD

Of all the Christmas episodes from Frasier this is my favorite. 2nd favorite is Miracle on Third or Forth Street from season 1.

Just a nugget on how good the writing was for this show… 3:22 Faye asked for them to send the elevator back up. Which is perfectly normal if they lived in an apartment building. Attention to detail to throw that in is impeccable

"I just wanted to show him that there were no hard feelings" 😂 By this stage, Niles is used to the crazy situations that the Cranes find themselves in so he goes along with it.

The show always knew how to poke fun at groups and people without going over the line. Wish more writers knew how to write that way

Every writer these days is scared of offending racial groups and being on the receiving end of ‘cancel culture’ And yet, take it from me…. a big fat Jew, nobody makes fun of the Jews as much as WE DO. All the best Jewish jokes are told by Jewish people.

@@Torahboy1 I mean yes, but you can't tell me the way Jews are portrayed nowadays is good. Like Howard Wolowitz-cheap, ugly, scrawny, lives with his mom, creepy.

Wayne Neill Australia hasn’t existed as long as we’ve been saying “next year in Jerusalem.” Unless you’re under the impression Australia has been around since the 1400’s?
