David Niven's Parkinsons disease was getting really bad at this stage but he said he wanted to host that evening for him as they'd been great friends for so many years. So touching. Fred, your elegance, power & musicality was hard to touch. Love ya always xxx

Years ago, I saw a PBS doc about the life and career of George Gershwin, featuring a brief clip of Fred and Adele at the rehearsal of a George Gershwin musical. In fact, Gershwin himself is at the piano. The clip lasts mere seconds. Fred and Adele were not in the show, but had just stopped by to hang out and were playing around when the camera caught their spontaneous dance routine. It is the only known film of the two of them together. Adele retired from the stage not long after.

So great to see Astaire and *Crawford* dancing! Easy to forget her dancer beginnings, her 40's work is so iconic...

Seems ole Mr. Niven may have been dipping his bill before he went on that night.

(From wikipedia) "In 1980, Niven began experiencing fatigue, muscle weakness, and a warble in his voice. His 1981 interviews on the talk shows of Michael Parkinson and Merv Griffin alarmed family and friends; viewers wondered if Niven had either been drinking or suffered a stroke. He blamed his slightly slurred voice on the shooting schedule on the film he had been making, Better Late Than Never. He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [Lou Gehrig's disease], later that year. His final appearance in Hollywood was hosting the 1981 American Film Institute tribute to Fred Astaire." After watching this video and the 1981 Michael Parkinson interview (I couldn't find the 1981 Merv Griffin interview) David Niven still seems lucid, though aging. His family obviously saw otherwise.

Do you mean the host of the AFI tribute? If so, that's David Niven.

@@ronaldlawson1564 His final public appearance. Niven was already mortally ill and so weak that his dialogue in his last movie, ominously called 'Better Late Than Never', was dubbed by Rich Little. He was not told for fear of upsetting him, but he found out from a press report. He died in 1983.
