Fred Astaire was a dancing genius compared to the crap we have to look at today this is just pure gold. I appreciate it because my father was in a lot of these old movies in the big bands playing in the background in Hollywood. In fact I just lost my mother who is 101 years old and she worked at Schwab‘s drugstore in Hollywood when my dad was in the studio bands. I grew up with this music

Fred and his choreographer, Hermes Pan, used to work on these dances, with Pan taking Ginger's part. Ginger would often be working on another movie. Then she'd show up for rehearsals and learn the dance. That's why Fred was the greater dancer. But not to denigrate what she did, Ginger had class. Fred insisted on no camera trickery, and no close-ups, so the audience could see everything the dancers were doing. He was a perfectionist, so the really good, hard working dancers loved working with him, and others not so much. I wish he'd done more movies with Rita Hayworth. And Ginger, come to that. Ginger was in the non musical version of "Chicago," "Roxie Hart." It wasn't made into a musical until later, but that would have been amazing!

Ginger didn't have quite the dance background as Fred. He was dancing on stage with his sister for several years before making films. But just look at her. She matches him step-by-step. The move at 3:57 with the hyper-extended knee, but in heels. Neither were very good singers, but they could sell a song.

I love watching ginger dance, but it’s sorta bittersweet knowing the hell she was put through during her shoots, weighted dresses, painful heels that at one point made her bleed through her white satin heels, not to mention the man himself flipping his shot during what I believe is this one due to the weighted sleeve hitting his face! She truly is one hell of a woman! Did everything he did backwards and in heels! Absolutely admire her!!

Was watching a documentary on Fred Astaire, and the narrator told how, during this dance, Ginger accidentally slapped Fred in the face with one of those heavy sequinned sleeves. They tried to retake it, but every time they came to that sequence of steps, Fred would flinch and lose the timing. So they used it in the film as it was. I keep watching for that, but have never spotted it. Maybe in modern times they found a way to edit out or fix it.

By the way, about that dress. I'm not sure of the colour, but you should definitely look into getting Fred Astaire's book "Steps In Time" if you ahven't read it already. It has some spectacular recounts of Ginger's dresses and the stories that went with each one. In this case, I believe that the dress was very heavily beaded, not exactly designed for dancing, and during the scene, Fred kept getting hit in the face with it every time she spun around. They did 14 takes and ended using take one :)

Fred Astaire was very talented... But Ginger Rodgers was really a dance genious : let's not forget she danced on high heels, and was able to dance up and down stairs (still on high heels!)... very often jumping up and down in stairs (still wearing high heels) and sometimes dancing backwards in stairs... I'm a great admirer of Fred Astaire, still I don't know if he would have been able to dance the same way wearing high heels as Ginger Rodgers did! He was very talented. SHE was a genious.
