The song is called "Puttin' On the Ritz" written in 1927 by Irving Berlin (born Israel Beilin May 11, 1888 in Tolochin, The Russian Empire - Belarus today).
@imonthebox1148

MsLatvia, Its refreshing to see somebody mentioning the songwriter. Irving Berlin composed over 3,000 songs through his 101 years. And he composed all his songs only on the black notes of his piano in the key of "f" sharp. He also had a lever built at the base of his piano that when pressed raised all the black keys up one octave. Irving Berlin was born in 1888, he died in 1989. As its coming up to Christmas, Ill just throw in that Irving Berlin composed the greatest Christmas song ever. White Christmas......

I always liked Ginger Rogers response when others it would raise to her about the phenomenal dancer in the talents of her partner, Fred Astaire. She would simply say, “yes, but you should try that backwards and heels!“ Touche Ms. Rogers! That’s a perfect commentary about the condition of women in this country when you think about it. Never paid as much; always have to work harder and better to go up the food chain. If you don’t believe me, think about what happened when they had to re-shoot all of Kevin Spacey’s scenes for the movie, “Money is never enough“ or somesuch. The leading male Mark Wahlberg, his contract offered many hundreds of thousands of dollars per day for were that contingency to occur. Michelle Williams, his female counterpart and one might say a significantly more accomplished actor, was offered base pay I don’t even think I was $100 a day. Mr. Wahlberg was so embarrassed by the difference in pay he donated all of his to charity. Wow.

If we're blue and we don't know what to do,why don't we spend our time to see this Mr Astaire's Puttin' on The Ritz.This grandiose musical sequence in the 1946 Paramount Pictures' Blue Skies is one of the most animating,captivating,and venerating solo dance numbers ever performed on the silver screen.The dance number of the great master hoofer and his back-up chorus ( the similar Fred Astaire's ) can be widely-praised for its well-coordinated movements,for its well-implemented visual trick,for its well-illustrated step designs,and for its well-crafted song.The reputation of Mr Fred Astaire as one of the all-time greatest entertainers will always be associated with facility,nobility,vitality,fidelity,and cordiality.He was / will always be one-of-a-kind performer and genuine personality in the showbiz world.

I remember Taco's version of 'Putting on the Ritz' circa '80's but it wasnt until today when I stumbled upon your post that Fred Astaire did the original version. Thank-you!

Astaire's was the third film version of it. He also recorded the original, racist version, about enjoying mockingly watching the fashionable people of Harlem trying to be high-class, in 1930, but that wasn't the original recording. (It also uses two different offensive terms for African-American women.) Look for the Harry Richman record version (not his slightly later film version) for the first recording (also of the old racist version).

+Superblobby It'll be clearer if you watch it in full (here: vimeo.com/6971656 ) The jumping cane segments involve a floor trigger mechanism. And the chorus of nine Fred Astaires was achieved by filming two separate versions of Astaire, repeating them four times and interleaving them. Not bad effects for 1946 but absolutely; all credit to Fred for devising and rehearsing this to perfection (took five weeks of, to use his own words, back-breaking physical work).

MerleOberon what special effects?
@DerEchteBold

Effects? You mean the slow motion? I think he actually did that himself. The multiplying of his image? Well, alright, I guess you can call that an effect but it probably wasn't such a big deal, they did similar things in earlier days of cinema. The main credit has to go to the performer.

@@youcanlearnalotfromlydia A spring mechanism? I thought they just ran the footage of him dropping it in reverse, but I couldn't find the cut.
