Education, Estelle Morris, Fred Jarvis, Memorial Lecture, Portsmouth.
On 1st June 2024 Baroness (Estelle) Morris of Yardley, Secretary of State for Education and Skills 2001-2002, gave the second Fred Jarvis Memorial Lecture jointly sponsored by the National Education Museum and the History of Education Society and supported by the New Visions for Education Group. She took as her theme "Learning lessons. What should decades of school reform teach us?"
In her own words, Estelle expressed her intention to give her audience in person and online "something to think about" but also her hope that after the 2024 General Election others might give their attention to her analysis of the lessons to be learned from decades of school reform in England and in Wales.
Estelle's lecture was delivered to an invited audience of leading figures in education at the Aspex Gallery in Portsmouth, the intended home city of the National Education Museum. The lecture was introduced by Stephen Morgan, Member of Parliament for Portsmouth South, Parliamentary Secretary of State for Early Education and an Honorary Patron of the National Education Museum.
These annual Memorial Lectures honour Fred Jarvis CBE, former General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers and a widely respected and leading figure who gave a lifetime of commitment to the advancement of education in England and Wales and through his work with international organisations.
