Every aspiring blues guitar player had better know "Hideaway" and some of the other popular Freddie King instrumentals, which have become standards - but no one plays them like the master himself. Of the three great "Kings" of blues - B.B., Albert and Freddie - the "Texas Cannonball" sometimes gets forgotten, but he was a genius of the blues, pure and simple. Not many players have/had his ability to compose and play such memorable blues instrumentals.

Greg Poulos was playing second guitar with Freddie King at the time of his passing. Greg hails from Sarasota, FL and he and Freddie King were here in town just days before Freddie passed, and had a jam session at the old 'Mildew Manor' home of John Lambie at the south end of Siesta Key. The Allman Brothers Band also used to jam at 'Mildew Manor' whenever they were in town back in 1970-71. Greg Poulos lives in Sarasota now and still plays gigs around town with his band.

This man and the legacy of recordings like this are the reason why I must one day have a Les Paul Standard with P-90s...a Telecaster comes close, but there's no substitute!

his instrumentals were the best, and although he used his own great signature style, no 2 ever sounded alike.

yeah, i used to start and stop san-ho-zay a million times on the turntable til' i got it pretty much down. i was so proud when i could do that back-pick thing he does from the high e string hitting the b and g string barring those on the 8th fret (c). i also worked a lot on this song and sen-sa-shun. but your right, his style was unique and that's what makes the blues so exciting. you can't really totally copy someone else. you gotta get it down then make it your own version like j. winter does.

@naabjr "Hideaway" was taken from a Gatemouth song and Freddie's picking technique was very simular to his. I saw Freddie a few times and can't recall him popping strings during a set. When he died his rhythm player was from Boulder, Colorado. I can't remember the guys name but he did a lot of gigs in the Boulder area after that with his own band.

If you increase the speed to 1.25x, it turns into a mid 60s British blues song.

it's weird how the bluesbreakers album was really only a few years after king made all those great songs and instrumentals on the federal/king labels in the early 60's.

@naabjr I know many of the players Luther had with him off and on and have worked with some of them. One of my friends has his last road PA system. Randy Jo Fullerton died last year, Jimi Schutte and Jim Solberg are still out playing as are many of the Madison, Wisconsin area musicians he used for live gigs. When Leon Russell got involved and tried making Freddie salable to White rock audiences I think the music suffered.
