In Yea we got a free camping spot behind the Country Club Hotel. It’s first-in best dressed and we loved that we could walk through the back gate into the pub and have dinner without dog Twyla outside.
The next morning, we head to Bonnie Doon, Victoria. Bonnie Doon is a small village in Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Maroondah Highway, in the Shire of Mansfield. Bonnie Doon is 168 kilometres north-east from Melbourne. It’s well-known from being in the Australian movie The castle. In Bonnie Doon we went for a walk around the town and checked out the holiday house from the movie, The Castle. We took the drone up over the walk bridge across Lake Eildon at Bonnie Doon.
Then we headed to Mansfield, a small town in the foothills of the Victorian Alps in the Australian state of Victoria. It is approximately 180 kilometres north-east of Melbourne by road. We looked around, done some shopping and sought recommendations on the best free camping spots.
On our second night we free camped at Tunnel Bend Reserve Campground. A level, well treed reserve just above the rushing upper Goulburn River, very good shade from Southern Blue Gums and Peppermint.
The third night we free camped at L R Skipworth Reserve Campground in Kevington, Victoria.
Skipworth Reserve is located on the banks of the Goulburn River. The campground is 300m past Poletti's track on the Jamieson Woods Point Road, which is sealed. There is ample room at the grassy campgrounds although like most nice spots can get extremely busy in the peak periods and its first in best dressed. The campground offers firepits and 2 long drop toilets. There is a rotunda to cook under if required.
Jamieson is a small town in Victoria, Australia. It is located at the junction of the Goulburn River and Jamieson River, 193 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. The name is believed to have been derived from George Jamieson, a shepherd who grazed sheep in the area in the 1850s. The historic High Country town of Jamieson has two pubs, one being the Courthouse Hotel and the other Jamieson Brewery which is famous for its raspberry beer. Fuel is also available in town along with a general store and a cafe that is only open on weekends (maybe check opening hours). The Kevington Pub (circa late 1800's)which is the last original pub between Jamieson and Woods Point. Bushwalking, fishing and swimming and 4wd is also a popular way to spend your time here or just sit around the fire enjoying your surroundings. It is also pet friendly.
