I always say, it's not the concept of free updates that is bad, is how you execute that concept. Super Mario Odyssey and Metroid Dread had free updates that actually felt like extra additional content because those games launched finished and packed with things to do. The most recent Mario Sports Games though? Those were unfinished messes when they launched and I fear Strikers is going to be the same, and I have the feeling that any type of sequel to Mario Super Sluggers, Wii Party or even freaking Wii Fit is just going to have the same problem (Even moreso with Sluggers since that game never came out in Europe or Australia) I'd rather waste 10 years of my life trying to unlock Mii Outfit B in Mario Kart Wii than having to wait three or four months until Daisy is available in Mario Strikers. At least with the Mii Outfit B I'd get a sense of satisfaction.

I'd actually argue that Animal Crossing New Horizons is... a special case when it comes to free updates and that it didn't fall off the radar as hard as many people claim. Sure, it was annoying how players had to wait almost a year and a half in order for Isabelle's morning announcements to not be a complete waste of time, actually having the Roost, other minor complaints etc. But when you look at it, the game launched with a lot of content and things to keep players busy for at least one whole year (Bought the game in June 2020, and I'm still not finished with the art gallery). Not to mention, Animal Crossing is the kind of game in which fully completing it as a player takes a lot of time, and I think many players are still interested in it to this day as trading groups are still pretty active, and they skyrocketed for quite a while when the 2.0. update came out. Plus it's still the second best selling Switch game with over 30 million copies sold worldwide whereas Mario Tennis and Mario Golf only reached about 1 million if I'm not misremembering. However, after realizing how much of a train wreck the most recent Mario Sports games have been when it comes to free updates (and Strikers seems to be heading down that path too. The moment I saw that Daisy wasn't in the initial roster is when I started to get suspicious), I do agree that it would have been better if the game had released complete, and I do aknowledge that part of that game's success is because it released at the beginning of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns.

Strikers isn't the worse case of this incident, since it is only adding characters. People say it is "unfinished" because it has a small roster, which I can understand. The main draw of the games Nintendo feels they can do this with IS the content. Party couch co-op games like the sports titles or the whole mini game genre needs the variety and high quality of content to get sales and be memorable. Without that they just become a flop, because who wants to get into a very niche game with already skilled and dedicated players online a month or two in just because it's then that the devs have been bothered enough to actually finish the game? Mainline Mario, Kirby or Metroid games would NEVER get this treatment, because the corners can't be cut for Nintendo to lazily release them.

If nintendo had the same thinking back in the days when they released Mario tennis 64 today(IF FREE UPDATES WAS POSSIBLE), they would have released it not July 21, year 2000, but July 21, year 1999 with 8 characters, half the stages and only tournament mode and a mode to play games. Then they would over time release 8 more characters, double the stages, and add some modes aswell. When all this is done the date is July 21, year 2000 and the game is complete. The downfall is that many people are not playing it anymore, not being able to enjoy the full content the game has to offer. Something we all actually could do in real life because the game was released in a complete state in July 21 year 2000.

It’s possible that this method of development works in Nintendo’s favor though as they can give less resources to games if they end up flopping. The idea I would think is to support games after launch respective to their success. I think these updates are also to try and get more sales over time as well. Whether this is effective or not is another discussion. It’s less committal upfront, it also just shows a lack of confidence in their abilities to produce something their fan base will enjoy and purchase. Forewarning: going to rant a bit about new Mario soccer game. But yeah I gotta say no Daisy, no Bowser Jr… little weird. Also kinda like where’s Diddy Kong? It really does depend on what the update release schedule and content will be. I mean I can’t be the only one who wants things like stages with hazards. If it’s just characters I feel like it will be a little unfortunate. But at the same time characters and bug fixes with some quality of life changes are the safest bet for updates. Charged was all about the mayhem and this new entry feels very toned down. Probably be a more balanced and competitive game, but Idk. I’m going to miss the crazy wacky fun of the previous title. Like the ball charge mechanic in the previous title was nifty. The different dodges and how you could score with them. How each character had their own unique item… it all just was very fun. And the those amazing character themes are missing! They have great additions like tackling an ally sends them forward with an extended tackle, the stamina system, the gear to tweak stats, the way items are dropped! Hell I’d even go so far as to say the way the hyper strikes are handled is far superior to before. It’s a mixed bag and I’m a little unsure how to feel about it just going in at launch. That’s the issue I think that many people are facing with a lot of Nintendo releases, particularly the sports entries. It’s this uncertainty; this question of will it be worth it later if not now?

I actually do have a theory on why Nintendo is doing this and I also have evidence to back this theory up. First Let's look at Mario Tennis Aces, this game released in June 2018 and then proceeded to get OVER A YEAR'S worth of free updates with the final character being Dry Bowser in July of 2019! Yes it would have been better if the game came out in July 2019 with the complete package but it was still good how much free content the game got. Now let's move on to Mario Golf Super Rush, this game came out 25th June 2021 and anyone that's played this game will tell you it's launch was horrible as the game lacked so much content but like with Mario Tennis Aces, people expected it to go down a similar route and end up being around the same as Mario Tennis Aces....except it only got 6 months worth of free content which isn't even half of what Mario Tennis Aces got. So what is the difference here? The difference is sales. Mario Tennis Aces sold over 4 million copies which is actually really good for a Mario Spin-Off that isn't Mario Kart. What did Mario Golf Super Rush get? Just over 2 million which isn't terrible but clearly way lower than what Mario Tennis Aces sold. This is why I believe Nintendo is delibarately releasing unfinished game and whether or not they continue making more content depends entirely on whether or not the game sells well. This way they can cut back on development costs if a game fails but if it doesn't they will pump out more content. In a way, it's like selling DLC but the amount of DLC isn't based on how much a season pass has but rather is based on how much a game sells. Also, another tidbit although this could be a good guess so I wouldn't use this as evidence but I feel is at least worth mentioning, there was a leak on 4chan around the time Mario Golf Super Rush came out that accurately predicted Toadette, Wiggler, Shy Guy, and Ninji as well as New Donk City. Now there was other content on this list that didn't get added but according to this leak, if the updates had carried on we'd have gotten all the Koopalings, Birdo, Spike, Kamek, and selectable Yoshi colours. There was other stuff on there too like "Observatory" which I'd assume would have been the Comet Observatory from Mario Galaxy and a "Golf Adventure Ex" which I'm guessing was meant to add more to the game's story. But even without the "4chan leak" the evidence is there so if this is the case, Nintendo needs to back off with this as it's very scummy.

Personally I don’t mind the concept of the “free content updates” but I think Nintendo needs to find a balance to make it effective. Like they need to add content and basic quality of life aspects at launch to keep the game alive and interesting while also have some content to release later in the games life cycle to keep it interesting in the long term. However it seems they are leaning towards the long term side and neglecting content at launch which makes the game die off before all of the additional content is added. So overall the concept is decent but the execution is bad and shows laziness which needs to be fixed.

I agree the practice sucks, but I think saying games like Animal Crossing had it is false. That game updated with holidays and such as time went on, so your first playthrough of the game would be the exact same, minus a few items, as it would be today. And I think Strikers will be a bit different than Aces and Super rush. Strikers is a fun game by default, this game seems to be closer to the Strikers on the gamecube, and I'm perfectly fine with that as that game is my favorite in the series. The animations are super expressive, the game looks amazing, the gear customization looks cool, the only thing that is lacking is the roster, which will be fixed. And when it is something as small as the roster compared to an otherwise great game, the free updates are perfectly fine here in my opinion.

This is the most common problem people talk about for the switch era. I have two theories. Theory 1: Nintendo is launching their games unfinished at full price just because the switch is selling well and the companies are greedy and are not bothering or trying to make the games have more content and finished. Theory 2: Considering how old Nintendo is they may be low on ideas and struggling to finish their games like how they did before the switch era. If they’re giving free updates for some games maybe they do care about their fans.

EA and Activision started doing stuff like 0-day patches, which were seen as completely unacceptable, but now even Nintendo is doing it.

I wouldn't say that Star Allies is an example of this. The original game launched with all the usual Kirby stuff, and it's about the same length as any other Kirby game (5 hours, give or take depending on deaths, plus some side modes and a new game+) The only planned updates were to add new dream friends, but I think when they saw that hardcore fans were disappointed with the difficulty of the game they decided to add a new game mode and a new difficulty setting to the ultimate choice.

We've seriously gotten to the point where Nintendo thinks that releasing their games like this is just for the better. They hate their fans and that might as well be one of the reasons they don't listen to criticism (Which could either be because they've only seen people blatantly accept this way of releasing their games, or just because they're a video game company). If people don't help stop Nintendo and their "Free Updates" throne of lies, I might as well just stop wanting anything from Nintendo. Every time we ask Nintendo for something, they just give us a lazy and unfinished version of what we asked for. Like when people asked for a Mario Kart 9, all we got was an unfinished booster course pass that's literally just dlc for MK8D. It really concerns me for the future of Nintendo. Like seriously, if this keeps up, Super Mario Odyssey 2 will release with only 3 or 4 kingdoms, and then like, 1 or 2 more kingdoms will be released every 6 months until the game is finished. I seriously don't want that to happen, and I don't think I'm the only one. sigh.... I miss the Gamecube, Wii, and DS era....... the games on those systems actually had effort and care put into (Not saying games like Super Mario Odyssey, Kirby and The Forgotten Land, etc. don't have effort or care I'm just saying that a lot of recent Nintendo games outside of Forgotten Land and maybe some other one/s I don't know about have been lacking and lazy)

Shigeru Miyamoto himself once said: "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad." The main issue is that this has become a standard on the industry. Many games do a "day one update" which fixes various bugs just so they can send the cartridges half finished before the launch date. Before online updates were a thing, games used to have less glitches and felt more complete. It's quite disappointing for Nintendo, as they used to be very dedicated releasing games. As you said, it can be a good thing if the game is complete, and DLC (paid or free) is always welcome if you have a full experience from launch, but being a justification to release incomplete or untested games is pretty terrible.

The worst part is that it hurts game preservation. Let's say 20 years from now someone from the future becomes curious enough to get their hands on a switch and buys a random switch game. Little do they know, that game they're playing would require connecting to Nintendo servers to get the full experience, that gamer is missing out on quite a lot of stuff and they will get bored very quickly. Also, this issue has been around even before Aces. The Splatoon franchise is a huge offender in the free content update scheme dating back to the Wii U era. Despite that, the franchise managed to sell very well due to its uniqueness, addicting gameplay, art style, and a whole ton of other things or maybe it's because it's an online multiplayer centric experience so players are naturally urged to keep playing, maybe both. The franchise would go on to be yet another major staple in Nintendo's catalog (whether it will go the way of Star fox or F-zero remains yet to be seen). Unfortunately, This success may have caused Nintendo to get the wrong idea, thinking this drip-feeding scheme would translate into other games. But as we all know, for most of these games, it has not worked. First impressions really do matter and if you don't put your best foot forward, how is anyone going to trust you again after you broke that trust when it mattered the most. By the time you finally update the game so that it's in the state, it should've been at launch, the player base would've moved on and it'll be hard to win them back. Ever since Mario Tennis Aces, I've become increasingly picky about what games I buy. And it's kind of embarrassing when they seems to neglect one of Miyamoto's most iconic quotes "a delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad"
