1070 was the standard for quite a while got a ton of work done through the ages. 57-59 is really the best hardness for that steel. There are definitely other options but I wouldn’t give up on this steel or the knife so quick.

I love the design of the knife, but the steel is definitely soft. I’d get it sticky sharp and then lose it in the middle of the day. Definitely easy to get it sharp but didn’t stay that way long. However, the geometry did help out a lot! Great video E!!!!

Great video, I like seeing the struggles and then you explaining why it is happening. So the sharpening experience was not good and the blade dulled with 1 days use on the factory edge. Hopefully it does better with your sharpening. Thanks for sharing, Live Long Prosper and Collect Your Own Way!

I absolutely LOVE watching your sharpening videos, E!! I always learn something, even if it's just a small something lol, by studying your form & technique...which I then try to implement into my own attempts at freehand. I'm still pretty horrendous at it...but I AM getting incrementally better every single time. I find your mastery of the form (those smooth passes! those even bevels!) and the effortless ease with which you do it to be very inspiring! You make me wanna 'get back on the horse' again, so to speak. Nickie is a gorgeous, trend-setting superstar, and always a welcome sight on camera!! Please don't steal her Crater Blue Bugout, Erica!! So that soft burr was flopping back and forth like Mac's saggy "bross" balls, huh?! 🤣. Maroon Brave Star hoodie (matching the maroon handle of the LT Wright Packer!) for the win!!! I love you ladies!!! Awesome video!!! ❤

I have a Condor Bushlore in 1075. It's super soft but I don't mind so much with a scandi grind where you have to remove so much material when sharpening.

A good way to move that burr is to just run the blade through some wood usually does the trick the just take it back to the stone to finish 👍🏻🇬🇧

It's good that the pups remembered to make some noise during sharpening. The inlay on the gec/ 2023Remington Deluxe Hawkbill Silver Bullet is sterling silver and 1095 at 59 rockwell. The liners were made out of cartridge brass. I'm surprise those that like knives made by GEC haven't bought them out. I do wish it was in a tube vs Rem. box and not marked but know BHq got it right. Hope you get to handle one Erica.

Sweet video!!! Hi Nickie!!!!!! Quick question for you. So you used 325 grit to sharpen the knife. I get that you're using a lower grit so you can "more easily" shape the edge. But then you only used that grit, along with a strop. And the knife is sharp enough. My question is would you be done at that point or would you then go the a 600 grit? Does that make it sharper still? Or what is the benefit/takeaway of going up the stones to higher grits? I'm guessing this is an easy question that I'm just somehow not grasping.
@ericasedc

So the reason I only did 325 on this particular knife, is because I knew it was gonna be soft. I could tell from using it. For me, there is no reason to polish a turd. 😅😂 It’s very soft steel that doesn’t hold an edge- why invest more time into it than needed? The 325 made it sharp enough for me😂 But typically on better quality steels I work up above 600 grit if I want a more refined edge!🎉

Love the blade and handle shape and proportion. Never used 1075, i don't think. Do you think it could be maintained with just a few swipes on the ceramic daily? Sometimes ya just gotta take them to the dentist and work on the teeth, but i don't think its gonna last long either, keep us posted.
@dualsportedc

Thought I heard the wind howl in the background! 👻 Question for my favorite practical knifetouber: my Manix 2 XL in S30V has a 17 dps bevel, which I think shouldn't be too aggressive? When I cut food (soft 🥪🥕🧅, no bone etc.) on the cutting board, I get tiny microchips on the apex, against the light you can see spots where the apex doesn't shine. Am I doing something wrong? Had this again and again... 😥

Best keep your sharpener handy. Every piece of 1075 I've ever used has dulled out almost as fast as 8cr13mov, which is to say FUCKING FAST. Nickie probably wiped out half that edge's life on the paper😂

@@ericasedc because Japan uses it in mid-grade samurai swords so it's assumed to be a good blade steel. The thing is, I've broken every 1075 sword I've ever had
