People in the know don’t underestimate them at all...particularly Kossoff. He is still held I extremely high regard 45 years after his death. Free were only around for a relatively short time. But they left behind an extremely fine body of work. Perhaps they don’t get talked about as much because they split nearly 50 years ago. But those of us that were there at the time still talk about them 👍

Simple, clean, groovin', no nonsense rock n roll that still holds up 50 years later. Just makes your ears and heart feel great. Like a fine wine or woman made to cherish. Free is top shelf in all areas. No one compares to Paul or Simon when they lock it in. Guitar & Bass had no choice but to jump on board. Awesome!!!

Been following them since their Tons of Sobs album, before Alright Now was hit, Kossoff was my guitar hero. Went into shock for several days when he died (technically a 2nd time) as I'd dreamed of seeing them live one day.. Then bought the limited edition Free Story double album, played it over and over for years - probably went through more than one stylus on that album alone!

@Divine Spark Yes I was there. It really was incredible. I don’t know if some of the equipment was damaged but they couldn’t use the whole of the set. For some reason Sunderland took to them really early and they just seemed to roll on from there. They were relatively short lived just 3 or 4 years really mainly down to Koss’s drug problems but they really were the business. If I had that time machine mate they would be the group I’d go back and see, and that from someone who saw Zeppelin, The Floyd and many others back then.

Chasbo Daniels Thanks and yeah, those are things it takes most guitarists a lifetime to achieve if they’re able to achieve them at all...and he had mastered it all at such an early age. But even so, the one thing no one can ever fake is soul and feeling...it’s something that’s in you or it’s not. You could feel every note he played because he meant it, such a special player.

I'm binging on Free today... Like I did yesterday & the day before that, I basically listen to them every day always have always will We all know how brilliant Paul was then, the magic of Kossofs guitar, but Andy was a fantastic bass player & gave Free its particular sound, he was unique & then was just 16 yrs old turning 17 after a few big hits Hard to imagine kids today doing what these guys did! Paul being the oldest at 20 & by then they were a huge band touring the world. Kossoff dying at 26 was worse than tragic, if he'd lived & got off the drugs then we would have seen him become a giant wth his playing its so so damn unfair he had to go.

Rusty Y, yes "wringing the life outa that guitar neck " Lately I've been thinking that same idea. GUITAR music usually has some non-musically correct sounds. RockNroll is about rebellion. So hang it by its neck, choke it, make it scream in agony, squeeze your fingers on it's Adams Apple. And the Wang bar makes that slow, death sound. Only to spring-back to life, and fight some more. Seems like Guitars have a lot to say. And they will YELL about it, if you're not paying attention. Gotta run , because I hear a siren I guess the guitar called 911 on you. Don't snap it's neck you'd miss your best friend. I know this stuff cuz I'm Guitarded.
