Some general, basic ideas:
Keep playing, keep listening, and end your music when you want to end it.
We can only play as ourselves, no right or wrong, your musical ears are the ones who decide.
Breath and let the sound, the music, flow.
“Wrong notes” don’t really exist, listen to it with interest, and continue from there, they can even be musically interesting.
Some specific ideas:
Give yourself a bed of sound, a chord with long low tones work well for improvising a melody. This morning my student only used C major chord and the chord sounded very long, vibrating along with the melody.
Create a story, for instance, in this video, ‘let the wind chime play when the wind blows’.
When improvising a melody, realize that a melody can go lower, higher or repeat the same tone.
A melody can have long or short tones. Listening deeply to the long tones help knowing where to go further.
A melody can have a counter melody/ a bass line.
Follow a certain rhythm
Follow a certain chord progression
Play a certain song/piece of music and let yourself get looser and change it here and there freely, as your musical taste allow you to.
Experiment with different tones (pedal/no pedal, staccato/legato forte/piano), etc.
Free improvisation is good to practice some freedom at the piano, to try musical ideas out, to practice listening and responding.
