Organization makes all the difference in a workspace! But, cost can be a challenge. Don’t let that stop you! There are items you likely already have or come with the products you are organizing that you can use. Some are permanent solutions, others fill in short-term until you can put a more robust solution in place.
We’ve found that getting organized is never an event; it’s an ongoing process and effort to beat back disarray by having designated places for tools and supplies. Doing so makes the workspace almost self-organizing. When we have quick access and intuitive places for tooling and supplies, it’s literally easier to put things away than leave them out!
While there are lots of great organization tools and racks for the shop and tool chest, many of them are a significant investment. That’s fine when you have the cash and you’ve settled on a method of storage and retrieval. Said plainly, we avoid committing to an approach until it is proven. It’s like renting a house in a new town you’ve moved to until you’ve seen what area of the community has the amenities you feel are important. Once you know these things, then you can buy with confidence.
To start organizing your shop, there is a lot you can do with very little investment. This episode shows how to begin by modifying consumer packaging that many tools (such as wrenches, nut drivers, and screwdrivers) come in. Other candidates for repurposing include corded and cordless tool carrying cases. Even small flat sturdy cardboard boxes can serve well in tool chest drawers. Once you get good habits in place, you can always upgrade later.
