Thank you for the interview. I recall Noam answering K. Kisin’s last question “what should we be discussing that we aren’t discussing?” on the Triggernometry podcast. Noam explained that he received comments from his patrons that he was “brave” for having the Star of David on public display. Noam expressed that he was concerned about the lack of education on Israel's history, and that it would lead to the rise of antisemitism, and the anti-Zionist movement. I watched that interview over a year ago and I was surprised by his answer but his observation was unfortunately accurate.

I’m sure people smarter than me have made this point, but acceptance of criticism or ridicule from those of the same tribe, but not others, is instinctual. It’s just an extension of something most of us experienced as kids: I can make fun of my brother, but you may not. It’s a hypocrisy we all share. The consequences of ignoring this social convention cross the line when I enjoin others to punch you too.

Right off the bat.... The the purpose of 'cancelling' (aka plain 'ol character assassination) is not to silence the target but to discourage imitation. To point out that the targets of 'cancellation' don't really get hurt and are often helped is to miss this point entirely.

Cancelling and character assassination are quite different. Cancelling is when public institutions and venues turn against a particular person. Character Assassination is when the potential Audience itself turns against them.

@GeorgeSmiley77 well Norm Finklestein cancelled a talk at Emory U. Because EVEN HE said the vibe was getting anti-semetic. Result? Protestors slaughtering Fink online "Oh NOW the real *gew* comes out," "They're all the same in the end" etc. And now the mob is latching on to claims that Edward Said disclosed that NOAM CHOMSKY is a "racist" "who thinks Arab scholars are inferior."

On the surface Noam Dworman is a rather likeable guy, but if you start paying attention to the content he puts out you'll notice he's véry complimentary to himself, he's very calculated and selective to the voices that he wants to elevate, he'll get into roaring arguments with directors of human rights ngo's over minutiae, but will give a neck massage to Sam Harris, author of 'in defence of torture' or people who profess the inevitabilitly of the endless occupation of the opt. He's been very much an apologist for the violence in Gaza, without entertaining in the least the perspective Yossi Verter wrote about in Haaretz on october 8 2023: How Netanyahu brought Israel to the brink of war. It can be entertaining but it's a deceptive and sometimes repulsive effort in my view. The whole free speech circle jerk is just typical smokescreen. When push comes to shove, he's very much a propagandist. The people who share his views will love it.

Ok, that ended too soon! I wanted to expand on his final thought. It was a very brave thing for him to say that as it obviously can be taken out of context by his enemies (like earlier discussions on the episode). We need more people willing to say that there are principles Trump has latched onto that are good, but that need to be reclaimed by people not Trump.

We don’t always agree and I think your identity is entrenched differently with its group think and resulting conclusions and judgements… but I do enjoy that you’re working towards ‘truth’ using discussion and opposing interpretations. I still think a Žižek allowed to speak would be an interesting, almost comic material like take on morality vs ethics. “Violence that transcends.” Would be a good starting point if I could suggest one. You’re mixed bag but I can dig you have a stance and are working it out in real time. Keep going. 🌱♾️

Noam, when you are citing John Adams you are not sounding like Trump in any way whatsoever. He probably doesn't know who he is. And when you say things like, There's still a hole in the ground at zero. We accept paralysis as a way of life. Etc. That's really boilerplate stuff and any politician that wants to get elected says things like that. Including Democrats.

Well, this was an interesting choice. Noam is one of the most bad faith actors on this particular subject. Clearly reason hasn’t watched any of his podcasts - and if they have, they’re doing this for the clicks. He’s not serious. He tries to do all these “gotcha” questions - and he admits to doing so in various podcasts. It’s fine to interview him, but at least have the decency to call him out of his dishonesty.

Really bad take about his @comedycellarclips podcast - in fact, on a recent episode, the sentiment emerged that in the better days of shows like Meet the Press, Tim Russert had a skill at deploying "gotcha moments" in a civil and unpartisan way, to simply keep talking heads in check, in the public interest. If you object to "gotcha" moments then you're afraid of arriving at the truth.

Gotcha questions are a powerful technique, just as ridicule is a powerful technique. We don't always need to deploy those techniques, but when we DO need them, we REALLY REALLY need them. Gotcha questions are NOT dishonesty! They are designed to EXPOSE dishonesty! Gotcha questions For The Win!
