I've been training exclusively with bands for 14 months straight, I've put on noticable muscle mass throughout my whole body, especially my upper body. The key to bands is learning how to get the maximum resistance out of them, where to grab them and how to stack them for peak muscle contractions. I stack an entire set of 4 bands for front squats and 3 for deadlifts and it's a killer. And depending on how far apart you step on the bands for deadlifts it can become ridiculously hard real quick.

The one thing I believe that you missed and is very important is the lack of injuries with the bands. I’m a veteran 65 years old and I was lifting weights until I injured myself so bad that I ended up at the VA hospital with a torn muscle of some sort from my back all the way up to the front side let’s say. I ended up in therapy for over two months and with stretching and bands I was able to get back in shape. I continue now with only bands. The one thing bands have especially over weights is that you can increase your bands without really worrying about injury. I know people that increased weights too fast or jerk them up when tired and end up getting injured. Like me! Good job on your videos.

I can easily train 4-5 times a week now, whereas before I was lucky to train twice a week when possible. Granted I have a couple of high and low anchor points at home which make them even more versatile, but even without anchor points, you can train the whole body easily and effectively and safely. I have a home gym full of weights and i may just stop using them completely... i am going to pickup up maybe another couple of bands so i have many more resistance options...years ago i was going to build a special bench with various anchor points to attach bands... now that i am pretty good with welding i think its time to build my bench... Average male is around 100. So yea I was weaker than the smallest weak lady out there Now in the first 3 months of using the bands I took it easy for fear of reinjury took some lazy breaks lol. The 4th month I'm taking it more serious and have regain my prior strength. I could have probably gotten back to normal in 2-3 months if it wasn't for the injury. It's worth noting I use therabands without handles the wide ones not the tubes or loops. I've switched to handles recently and will be buying the tubes or loops next. Bands definitely work especially for tendon injuries.

Great explanation I've been discovering how valuable bands can be during this pandemic. I use the kind with handles and tube shaped band. Which ones would you recommend for a fairly advanced lifter?

My personal preference is resistance bands for Arms and weights for everything else. I find myself getting injured too often pushing hard with weights on biceps.

I tried lifting dumbbells and I dropped them on my big toe. I tried using resistance tubes and they snapped back and hit me right in the mush. I gambled and I lost. I cheated and I won. I've decided to eschew exercise in favor of cheating because that's the only thing I'm good at.BTW, has anybody ever thought of using springs or bungee cords? Maybe I'll try a Total Gym. I figure I ain't gonna drop it on my big toe (or any of my other toes) while working out and it's not gonna snap back and hit me in the kisser. Oh happy days! As a side note,Chuck Norris will celebrate his 95th birthday this year. What a guy!

What resistance bands brand do you recommend to build muscle ?

None. They are great for toning and working through injury. If they were better at building muscle than pro bodybuilders will be using bands over free weights.

I really like resistance bands and been working out with them for the last months, but there is something I believe is a disadvantage that you didn't mention: when the resistance band is less tensioned, which happens at the start of the movement, you don't have much tension. Only at the peak you will get the full benefit of it. With the weights, you get the same resistance through the whole movement, from start to end. For example, if you're squatting using a band to make it harder, when you're at the lowest point, there won't be much additional load, or none at all. You'll begin to feel the tension as you go up and stretch the band. On the other hand, squatting with free weights will generate the same amount of resistance, from the lowest part of the movement to the highest, all along. I don't know much about this, I'm just an amateur, but I think it's better in terms of gaining strength and growing muscle if you have the same amount of tension through the whole range of motion (the higher the tension the better, without messing up the form, of course). I mean, it sounds more interesting to me if your body is submitted to the highest pressure it can take, through the whole exercise (bottom up / side to side, etc.), in a constant way. I could be wrong, though. Anyone have thoughts on this?

With weights you’re strongest at the top of the movement and have very little resistance there whereas with bands it’s the opposite. It’s harder to hold the isometric with bands and the contractions are more intense.

Why not use both at the same time? If you're using a dumbbell, add a resistance band in the middle and you'll get a consistent tension throughout the entire range of motion.
