I am currently trying to teach myself Freecad by using a Learn-by-Doing tutorial book and on one exercise its trying to show me how to "extrude an object to a selected face". Basically I created a model, and now its telling me to create a (rectangle) sketch next to the model, use the "Constrain Coincident" tool to join a corner of the sketch to a corner of the model, then use pad to create the extrusion. I can't access the sketch and the model at the same time to use the "constrain coincident" tool. Is this even possible?

You need to import an edge from the model from within the sketcher.. There is a tool in sketcher called import external geometry. Menu item Menu locationSketch → Sketcher geometries → Sketcher External. This will allow you to import that edge or vertex which you can attach your sketch to

@@MangoJellySolutions Thank you very much! The book didn't mention that step in the instructions, but showed small text in the diagram. Finally finished the exercise!

the two circle centres can be constrained horizontally directly, horizontal constraint works on 2 points...

Thanks for your continued efforts with these videos. They really help to learn the program along with its limitations. The tangent constraint on two lines is one I was not aware of and it seems to be the Freecad version of "colinear constraint" I used to use in Fusion 360. It's been so long since I used F360 that I'm not certain.

Thank you for your comments always appreciated. And always interested with how these are similar to other CAD programs as I end up having a read up about them. Gives me an idea of what people are used to who are migrating to freecad.

very good video as always. I was wondering if you could do 3d sketch in freecad? I am creating harness in Solidworks using this feature and it works quite welll. I place all my clamps and support components in the main assembly and then, in context, I do my 3d sketch that passes into all the clamps and with a tangential feature, the spline create a wonderful path for a sweep. Can you do the same in freecad?

Thanks for the comments. I know exactly the feature your talking about in solidworks. It's where you can use the tab key to switch between the planes. It's a wonderful feature which I wish freecad had. Freecad works in a different way in that you have to create and attach sketches to planes and then draw on those sketches. You attach sketches to parts of your model then draw on those importing geometry as a reference so you can attach sketches to those points. Solidworks approach is easy and faster. I think I understand your approach with the assembly and sounds interesting. I'm going to tinker with Freecad to see if I can find something similar.

@@MangoJellySolutions Hi thanks for the response. I read your comment and i don't recognize what I do to create my electrical harness in solidworks. My first step (in SW) is to import and position the p clamps or other types of clamps in the vehicle, then I import my harness in the vehicle. The harness itself is an assembly composed of two connectors ( one at both ends) and a cable. The cable is a «part» that I edit in context in the vehicle once all my clamps are positioned. So once every clamp is placed and oriented properly, I go to edit the part that is the cable of the harness and then I create a 3d sketch. I start by placing some small line that is concentric with the clamps ( 10 or 15 mm long lines that goes through the clamp). Once this is done, I connect the line that goes through the various clamps by adding a spline between each one. For each end of the spline, I hold down ctrl and I choose the small line of 10 mm plus one end of the spline and then I click «tangent» in the option on the left. This way, I can make a very organic harness and if I move a clamp, the harness follows automatically. Was wondering i we could do the same in Freecad. Thanks again and have a nice day.

So how does one make a tangent to a BSpline ? I have a profile made entirely with BSplines. I want to make it a thin shell. The best way I can think to do this is to create a tangent to each of the BSpline points and then move inside to create a 2nd set of points the thickness away from the first set. Do you have any other ideas on how this could be done ? Great videos, btw.

Tangents with b splines unfortunately are not yet supported. But from what you have described you can use the part workbench you and extrude your profile which will make a solid if the profile is closed. Go to the data tab and set the solid property to false. You will get a shell which you can then set the offset 3d to the value that you want. You can fill this offset if you so desire. Or take your sketch. Jump into the part and use the 2d offset. You will have a offset and inside a sketch which you can do operations on both. It's funny you should say about this as I am just putting a video together explaining a similar solution. It will be released on my channel soon. Glad you like the videos.
