I really like this video. A long term freecad user, sometimes screaming at the screen :) to hide and show objects just hightlight them and press spacebar. To see "through" your objects while sketching use either view> draw style> wireframe OR while in sketch you have the option to use "View section" a blue box with a skech symbol on top. Tooltip is "Switches between section and full view". Another tip is when referencing the origin you don't need to select it. Just select the object (in sketcher) then choose, for example, horizontal length freecad will reference the origin for you. Every click counts :). EDIT: Just noticed you mentioned this later. I know you now know this but I added the comment for newer users who finds this excellent video ( I know it's old but very usefull anyway). Thanks for sharing!

07:45 to 08:50 I think it's possible to save some drawing by selecting the whole sketch up to that point, then the horizontal axis and then selecting Sketch->Sketcher Tools->Symmetry or the symmetry tool button. I'm just starting though so maybe I missed something.

you can press "spacebar" on model tree, to hide/unhide elements like sketches, bodies and so on ;)

I just started using the FreeCAD 0.2 and have been following this tutorial to get up to speed. One way to mirror the sketch profile is to select all the sketch features you want to mirror with your last selection being the sketch feature that you want to mirror about. Then go to the DOF menu and use the symmetry option. I used this to mirror the wheel rim profile, but it does not carry over all the constraints so you'll need to redo those. Thanks for taking the time to make these tutorials!

Outstanding work. As a software engineer with little exposure to CAD until recently this tutorial helped me get my head around the concepts used in modern paramedic modeling systems. Thank you.

Yesterday, I had no clue how to use FreeCAD. Was seriously struggling to even use the mouse. Today, I finished building this wheel after following your video step by step. Amazingly powerful program and awesomely informative video. You are a very talented man.

Great video, really useful for a long term SW user like me. Going to have to re-watch and follow along, build up a little "muscle memory". I have version .19 but it shouldn't be an issue. By demonstrating how to carry over your existing SW skills you've crushed the learning curve for a lot of us. Great job!!

I mostly used Inventor and SW at the uni and started working as designer with CATIA and SW. At home for my hobbies I thought FreeCAD was pretty adequate, but never tried doing CAD with it (mostly used its FEA and measure tools). This tutorial is very helpful.

If you're running windows 10, I can't help you with a dark theme, though I think there are some options listed somewhere on FreeCADweb.org. My dark theme is running on Linux Ubuntu 16.04, and it's the obsidian green theme. It changes the theme of everything and is installed in the terminal. My windows 10 is the default theme and is boring.

i swear freecad is a fork of pro-e haha. so much similarity. I do like solidworks better for the dimensioning and constraining. Sometimes in freecad, you have to do 10 mouse clicks rather than 3 haha, but i still use freecad cuz i cant afford that SW hahahaha.

I enjoy them all quite a lot! I like to focus on FreeCAD because the price is right, and I focus on Alibre for its affordability. Happy modeling

@@JokoEngineeringhelp thank you:) i will try to enjoy my modeling. I am so used to sketchup pro and SW but i do want to learn freecad. I did my CSWP a few years back. Thanks for all your videos. its been great to get back into it. i use sketchup for my engineering parts but also some casual game art. sometimes i need a break from engineering haha

Thanks for the tutorial! Is there any way to transfer 3D models from solidworks to freeCAD?
@JokoEngineeringhelp

You can import step and STL files but like any other platforms, transferring them with a history tree is impossible due to kernel differences.

Hi. You don't need to mirror the sketch, just revolve the part you've done fisrt and then mirror it in the PartDesign workbench. Enjoy!!

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but why did the groove cut (which rounds the ends of the spokes), not affect the rim?
@JokoEngineeringhelp
5 жыл бұрын
No stupid questions here. The spokes were rounded to the same diameter as the rim so that they would merge but not have "overlap". Does that help?
