Hi, great video! How did you get started into free diving? How good of a swimmer were you when you started? I looked up the free diving school you mentioned, oceanoid, and they are still active, how was your experience with them? Looking forward to more videos! =)
@PNWSamson
Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I got into freediving as it was a cheaper alternative to scuba diving and I didn't have the room for all the equipment associated. I also like the physical and mental aspect involved with breath hold diving. I was a solid swimmer before hand and comfortable in/around the ocean which definitely helps. I have a few friends who didn't have any experience in the water and they are freediving pretty effortlessly now which is awesome! Oceanoid is awesome, I'd recommend them hands down. Both Matt and Roberta are great people.

Thanks man! That's where I dive too, all around British Columbia. Check out divingsports in Vancouver. They have all the freediving/spearfishing gear you could think of. If you're in Victoria, a brand new shop just opened this week called East to West Freediving.

I don't know about the shipwreck toxicity, but the whole Brittania area is quite bad. If you hike just above the tourist area, there is a hydro electric plant that is completely unattended, and toxic chemicals leech down on to the entire area.

Yeah man it's pretty brutal. I left an article in the description about the history of Howe Sound. That mine really did a number back in the day too.

@PNWSamson

You got it man! It's an alchemy neck weight. The water is cold in Canada so we need a lot of neoprene to stay warm. As a result, we are super buoyant and having all the weight on a belt can cause a sore back. Having a neck weight allows for better distribution.

Enjoyed this one and will rewatch the previous one you did...great its so close. It would be great to resurface but who would pay for it... most of the harmful chemicals have unfortunately probably washed out I would guess...
@PNWSamson
Жыл бұрын
Thanks man! And true, it would be an expensive endeavor. Probably end up on the tax payers. About the toxics, I'm sure some would wash out immediately and others could take years or centuries. Lots of plastic stuff on board.

Gotta leave the shipwreck at this point, Regardless of leeching of poisons or not it seems that it has created more good than bad.
@PNWSamson

Yeah I'd agree. Artificial reefs go through rigorous decontamination before they are sunk. Too bad this one didn't have that opportunity.

Between you and Kimi Werner I've been inspired to learn to free dive and spear fish (I'm a scuba diver, so not much spearfishing for me). I was just in Hawaii last week and signed up for an intro to spearfishing and free diving course... but of course, the 1 time a year it stormed on Maui is when I was there.. Turned the entire coast into chocolate milk... So my course got cancelled. I'll be up on the Island in April to dive God's Pocket for a few days... I'll have a few extra days, so maybe I can get some free diving and spear fish learing in! Any suggestions?
@PNWSamson
Жыл бұрын
Oh that's a bummer! I hate when stuff like that happens. Happy I could be some of the inspiration for you to give it a try though! God's pocket would be amazing. It's high on my list but I don't have any plans to dive it nor am I actively trying to make plans. Unfortunately I don't have any recommendations for that area but I'm sure the entire coast in that region is phenomenal. Do you live on the mainland?

Let it be because there’s already so many life forms on it and I’m sure that some fish or other type of species has a home on that shipwreck and it would be pretty devastating to the species in there that has to move homes
