Minh Nguyen But the math dont add up. How do you make a living from this? The nearbh shores will be picked bare by a year. Then you need to travel around and pollution just destroys everything wild. Maybe if its before industrialisation but now you are competing global farms. You picking all day might not even cover the travel costs. Dont let that amount of harvest fool you its probably more than 10 people working all day splitting the loot.

Actually, they are careful not to take everything, so that they never deplete their supply. Been working like that for the past 3,000 years. They sell each abalone for around $35-$50 each, and on the day I dived with them, she pulled out 17 abalones. They don't get rich but they can live within that budget
@iamkat5e

John Enos 17 abalones? If it's really $35-50 each, that'll be like $595-$850 on that day. That sounds like a crazy amount imo

Don't know what the standards over there are, but your best scenario, 850 dollars, is not too far from an average salary here in Croatia, way more than enough to live a very decent life.

Game Taco they probably see marine animals, but sharks are pretty harmless unless they mistake you for a seal or other food

Since they do not use airtanks and other equipment, they probably do not go too far out to dive. Meeting sharks might be very unlikely for them.

I generally read that pearl divers throughout the history occasionally had dangerous encounters with wildlife. Surely an Ama here and there did too.

You pinch your nose, hold your breath, and blow air out your ears. The pain you feel is from accumulated pressure in your ears which makes your head hurt and your ears feel like they'll burst.

this is a wonderful story but the title is very misleading and I believe that is intentional. not a single glimpse of a pearl nor mention of pearl fishing, so why is that in the title?

As she said, the amount of Ama is declining. Plus, it is highly unlikely anyone does any major fishing in that part of the ocean, considering the Ama are there. So, the idea of populations declining seems unlikely. Ama fishing does not seem as efficient (and therefore is not a strenuous as modern fishing), so there is seriously no way they can cause a population to go extinct. Sea creatures usually reproduce with tens to hundreds of offspring. Also, did you not notice that there is a fish market? They sell what they got. Considering the title states they're "pearl divers" I would like to assume that they occasionally find a pearl or two.
