Lindis Pass Historic Hotel Campsite is my favourite freedom camp. The land is part of DOC’s Nine Mile Historic Reserve, located in Lindis Pass, Otago.
You don’t need to have a certified self-contained vehicle to stay at this freedom camp, so staying in tents is fine here. A long drop toilet has been provided for hikers, cyclists, and those staying in tents.
Access to this freedom camp is somewhat difficult, along a narrow dirt track that is 6km long with potholes and rocks. It's more suitable for 4WD vehicles. I made a separate video about the road showing my dashcam driving footage, so you can see the road for yourself: • Driving to Lindis Pass...
As this site has no mobile phone reception or internet signal, and it is down a narrow dirt track, I've listed some safety precautions in this video and rules to follow. This site is probably best suited to experienced campers, as there are a number of hazards (the river, cows etc), and emergency vehicles will have a hard time getting down this road if you have an accident, such as a fire caused by cooking getting out of control.
Thanks Department of Conservation for this great freedom camping site.
