This talk is really about the essence of overcoming addiction. Through mindful practice, we can say no to dopamine addiction.

Notice the impulse. Notice the brain making its decision. Haha. So true. When we meditate. We literally go into the frontal cortex. You feel it in your forehead. The quintessential third eye. The deeper and longer you rest the mind and oneself in the cortex through meditation. The longer and more profound your mindful awareness and free will. By resting in the control center of the brain, the greater our ability to drive the ship that is brain mind and body.

Brother Linh. I agree. Before practicing mindfulness I had little free will. Now. In the now. With meditating and strengthening my frontal lobe connection. I feel free. The script of my life can change. I can live a relaxed day. - - - One day I did not meditate. I had no choice or freedom. An inability to do anything other than react. With meditation, comes the ability to respond freely in countless different ways throughout the day. I also know by turning on loving centres of the brain my thoughts and actions change.

I think looking into this idea of 'intelligence'. Linh is talking about social dominance orientation. His brain wanted to assert and intellectual claim to dominance in the room, where an implicit order had not been established. An implicit competition to establish rank and position was occurring in the brain. This is often unconscious. Mindfulness brings this to awareness. The need to do this can be exhausting and a tremendous weakness. Because acting in such a way goes against interbeing and nonself and nonduality. To be low and high are same. Not needing to shine brightly one dazzles with a dull and far rarer humility. To assert, to dominant, to be attached to position, rank, this is an impediment to higher brain configurations. The ancient reptilian regions of the brain and perhaps monkey brain regions are hungry, the cortex, sees, accepts and let's them go. It's incredibly helpful to hear linh opening up about this. This issue is massive and creates unhappiness.

Just today I listened again to the interview of Brother Spirit and Brother Phap Dung at COP 26. That was a great interview and KZitem followed it up with this dharma talk. I’m sure PlumVillage knows that many of us are lay practitioners who have never had a chance to visit France, but through the videos almost feel as if we know some of the monastics .Brother Spirit expresses himself well, and seems to continue to grow and have more to give. I’m very grateful for this talk because it reinforces an insight I’ve had recently, which is that my practice will save me. It’s not just a nice thing to do but a matter of survival and a deep resource in difficult times. I also smiled and could relate to that desire to speak up in a discussion. I think that competitive urge is watered in us when we are in school settings, so we can be gentle with that tendency. I have also noticed that if I wait long enough, because we are all connected perhaps, someone, or even the person I would have addressed, will say the important points that I really thought needed to be brought out. And if that doesn’t happen, then I know I should speak.

This talk hit me like a lightening bolt, thank you 🙏🏻 How do you discern and choose between being pushed/the compulsion to act, as you describe, and to (for example) become ordained, or compose music ...? Because such pushings are incredibly strong, and can really interfere with zazen/meditation (especially music). I ask because I know you are also an accomplished musician and composer. With love and bows, 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Brother, Ive often had this feeling of needing to speak, especially during graduate school. Sometimes I felt a sense of shame though, after speaking. I didn't really understand. But when I found Thich Nhat Hanh on here I gradually learned to be nicer to myself and those habits have begun to fall away. I am so happy to have your dharma talks too-- this one is so nice, just a really sweet feeling to it. I love the longer talks too. Thanks 💕 ever so much.

Brother Linh. What I feel happens is that we grow a plant in the mind. It as if a neural web (circuitry) is ejected or released out of the centre of the neocortex. This Web or tree like roots in the mind take root. It then sets out to colonise and integrate the different regions of the brain. As we meditate different brain integration wirings occur. The Christian symbolism of trees, seeds, fruit, etc that Thict tells us about are meaningful.

Dear brother Linh. I understand and appreciate our honesty and insight. But I feel somehow disappointed about your action, or rather non-action. Ok, you may have the intention of wanting being recognized - but this is not important in the situation you describe! Because saying something and being inteligent as you are- you nay contribute to wellness of your brother and sisters who needed help! It was not about you. It was not about the freedom or not of your free will. Your real intentions to talk are not important . The only really IMPORTANT thing was to give the politician as many opinion and ways of speaking as possible. And you may contribute a lot with your way of expressing opinions.
