Great Video.I have had locks for about 4 years this time around. I had them in college for about 4 years too. I started this time The same as last time, twisting for a while but since I do my own and Twisting is so time Consuming, i just stopped messing with them. They have much more Charector now, and people actuallythink I do something special to them but I just lett them know that THEY are the ones doing something special to thier Locks., and I simply let them live on their Own.

Thanks for making the video and starting something.... I've recently started freeforming -- I'd like to see others journey's - to see what stages mine will go through- right now they're in the sticking up phase..

I'm just like you. I started at the salon, intended to keep them manicured, and somewhere along the way decided to maintain them myself and freeform. Only instead of separating every wash (I'm too lazy), I twist them at the roots once a month without clips and wash a few days later to unravel them. Nappy roots just the way I like em. I have made videos about my journey as well. Good luck with yours.

@ tinamweni...trust me i know about "texture issues" lol i simply separate after every wash. i also go through them in the mornings and just gently "stretch" between the rows and make sure none are joining. the key is to be consistent and thorough, that way none of them have time to marry. i'll be posting a vid of this soon.

Your hair looks beautiful. I like the thickness, and fullness of your locks. How long have you been locked? My mother freeforms as well. But she only separates twice a year or so. I do disagree with your statement about everyone with manicured locks hair looks the same. Locks come in diffrent textures, lengths, sizes and partings. I've never seen two people whom locks look exactly same. Look forward to more posts.

From organic, freeform, manicured, to sisterlocks, we're ALL one mighty force of beauty to be reckoned with. I do understand that you want to share with freeformers to gain from their experiences, so check out SupremeDejhan's channel. Her's are just as lovely. Happy locing!

thanks for the info! i guess it all depends on the person. i consider the dreds your father speaks of "organic" locs, where you don't even separate. then freeformed, like mine, and then maintained or "traditional." but thanks again...i love learning new things about my hair ;-)

Glad to find the vid. I really want freeform locs but my hair is really really soft and didn't take well to the cultivated method, don't know if freeform may work better (or if I would end up with old school Viking hair, lol). Also navigating starting them at work, but I work for the gov't (in central office, not with the public)so at least it wouldn't be the same challenges as working in a private sector.

@Nerefurian nope! not at all. yo really just need to keep them clean. i think all the extra stuff we do (condition, oil, acv rinses) is out of habit, because we've been conditioned and think those are things we need to do.

@vaberella the cool thing about freeforming is you can start/stop at any time and don't downplay your month...yes, still early in the game, but longer than a lot of people make it! lol halle, huh? that's a new one. pam from "living single," sure. tracy chapman? ok. but halle is a new one for me lol

just so you know, over hear in canada, we ONLY freeform, infact if you go out side with your dread locks all neat and the parts all showing your scalp...it looks unusual to us...so free forming seems like the 'right" way to do dread locks to me hence the "lock" part of dread locks.

I have sisterlocks (med & Lg in that family) by the way but find myself lock stocking traditional thicker and other locks, I don't like my supper neat or what someone might call messy....I believe someone might say I semi-free form because i go a few months in between tightening -not a choice my sisterlocked sister practice....let our hair JOIN us together...feel special because we are the only race for the most part with kinky, nappy hair

lol you are the 2nd person to say this. mine were started as 2st twists, but freeform does not always equal multiple sizes. search for AWASH77. freeform, just washed and left them alone. they are small and uniform.

i learned as a child growing up in the carribbean that they are not called dreads or locks. nothing is "dreadful" about them. and not "locks" as many people spelling incorrectly....because they offer you freedom, not take it away as locks and chains do.

you have GORGEOUS hair, So how do you keep the locks apart I tried to freeform my locks, but after showering I could never get them separated without having to break my hair litterally! perhaps it's the texture? ps i can't believe it I thought you were the same age as me, not that it matters:-) I'm looking forward to follow the journey. thanks for checking me out. your mom's hair must be awesome! but if she only separates 2ce a year, i wouldn't really consider that "manicured," well, not in the traditional sense, anyway. but i do agree with everyone's head being different. i guess i meant the ones that are maintained on a regular basis look similar, to me anyway.

it's all a personal preference...locks WILL NEVER be exactly alike perfectly parted or Not because we all have uniquely different hair textures...my friends' daughter (3) all have locs maintained with a tool ALL look different. I know it is NOT your intent but you sound angry that others have decided to wear neat locks..I personally love seeing videos that others have posted that show many types of locks and I personally have not seen any locks that I didn't think were uniquely beautiful
