So sad this series didn't continue on. I like how this shows the vast resources of the Shivans. They didn't even need to evacuate all the Juggernauts. It took the allies 20 years just to make one juggernaut, and the Shivans have like 100s of them and they can just throw them away to nuke stars. The mystery, fear, and desperation in freespace is part of what made it so awesome. Just when it feels like your people are getting the upper hand, the story is like nope sorry your still screwed.
@SRosenberg203

And it's so interesting too, because it seems like the Shivans are clearly creating a nebula in the Capella (Vega? I forget which system it is) which brings up a whole series of new questions about them. We know, or at least theorize, that they are related to subspace in some way, and they emerge to destroy civilizations that use subspace aggressively against other civilizations. It could have just been a coincidence and game contrivance that the portal in Gamma Draconis leads to a nebula, but after showing that the Shivans can cause a star to go supernova, it seems pretty clear that they CREATED the nebula on the other side of the portal. Why do it? Do they like the aesthetic? Does the EM field shit somehow help their ship systems instead of hindering them like it does with Terran and Vasudan ships? Are they somehow related to nebulas the same way they are related to subspace? That's what makes the Shivans one of the best antagonists in any video game I've ever played. They're so threatening and scary and mysterious, and we know almost NOTHING whatsoever about them, no matter how many basilisks and manticores we kill.

Furthermore, the shivans in freespace 1 were just a "scouting party" (according to the Freespace 2 story). So, the Shivans didn't build the 80 Sathanas in the 35 years interval between the two games. The ships could have been a part of the shivan main fleet for centuries before the events in freespace 1.

I think the Shivans were drawing out the hydorgen somehow in the sun to power their mega subspace drives. Seeing that a sun will keep burning as long as long as it's hydrogen supply is high. As for their destination, I believe that they use the sun to get back to their own system. As in "The Lions Den" mission, there were over three Knossos Portals in that area saying that the mystery of the Shivans may never be solved. And no, Im not a Geek, I just love this game.

Wicked. Neutralized the star's gravity somehow, basically allowing the opposing repulsive forces to blow the star apart. All for our destruction, and even while costing thousands of their own. INCREDIBLE last mission. Tried to save as many ships as I could but they just kept coming, and then you learn that much of it was in vain.

I imagine the Juggernauts that remained were either too damaged to make the jump, or simply overloaded under the stress. Once the star went nova their generators went completely black and their engines shut off. Maybe they were left behind as additional fuel for the supernova? As powerful as the Shivans are, there's no way they'd just waste Juggernauts like that (keep in mind they didn't even have the resources for a second Lucifer in FS1).
@Been2Hell

@ColdCutz Nope, they didn't have to destroy the star in order to defeat the terran-vasudan alliance. Even with the help of the Colossus, it took a lot of effort to destroy just ONE of the Sathanas class warships. In the game, you see that they have at least 20. The two "dominant" theories are that either a) Shivans create nebula fields and then mine them for energy (they had miner ships in the nebula system that you visit soon after the Shivans reappear and....

there's a mod (cant remember the name) where that exact thing happens. The gate itself looks like it was based on an arcadia station, but it's aperture is large enough to fit a colossus through. Of course, the terran/vasudan alliance has had 50 years of shared history, but earth itself had remained isolationist, so a civil war brakes out, to reclaim earth.

If you look at them those that did not jump were running the green supernova generator after the ones that jumped shut theres down. Seems that whatever they are doing it takes a lot more energy to _initiate_ the effect than to continue it. Like pushing a car, takes less strength to start it rolling than to keep it moving. Those that were _maintaining_ the effect had to stay doing so till the rest had jumped or begun jumping, whereupon they simply shut down.

One or two of the Juggernauts would have been enough to decimate the terran / vasudan alliance, yet they don't participate in the "battle". The prevalent hypothesis is that they use the power of the supernova to create a "super" portal to their home universe / dimension/ or sth. Some had to stay back to finish the job... But then again, god(s) move in mysterious ways and this is the impression Shivans leave. Creatures of immense power, whose true agenda is beyond human speculation.

Not neccessarily. While the GTA/PVN, later GTVA, has the smaller manpower, Sol is isolated from the rest of the galaxy - the Lucifer debris is likely badly damaged. The GTVA on the other hand has the remains of the entire Shivan armada of the Great War at their disposal, sans the Lucifer. And considering the reference by a pilot in FS2, I find it likely that Volition retconned the universe, adding beam cannons to the shivan arsenal during the great war. :)

What proof does anyone have other than Admiral Petrarch's rhetorical musings at the end of the game? He said 'MAYBE' they're doing this to go between dimensions. Besides, if blowing up a star was the 'easiest' way to do it, considering they lost 20% of the Juggernaught fleet due to overuse of that ability and shorting out their systems, there'd be no stars of sufficient size left and no Juggernaughts left to do it with.
